Bingin vs Canggu: Which Should You Stay In? (2026)

Bingin vs Canggu: Which Should You Stay In? (2026)

Updated 29 October 2026 | 12 min read | By Rissa Prima, Digital Marketing Manager, Cabo Bali

The short answer

Bingin vs Canggu comes down to one question: do you want quiet or choice? For most couples, surfers and repeat visitors, we would pick Bingin. It is a small cliffside surf village with sunsets over the reef and evenings that end early. Canggu, and its calmer northern end Pererenan, is the better base for first-timers, groups and anyone who wants cafes on foot. They sit up to two hours apart, so pick one base.

Who this is not for. If you need a calm swimming beach or a big night out on foot, Bingin will frustrate you. If traffic and crowds ruin your mood, skip central Canggu. Still weighing up the wider Bukit? Read our Uluwatu vs Bingin guide.

Quick answer

  • Best for couples: Bingin, for cliffs, sunsets and quiet nights
  • Best for first-timers: Canggu, ideally Pererenan
  • Best surf: Bingin for experienced surfers, Canggu (Old Man's) for beginners
  • Best food scene: Canggu, by a distance
  • Swimming: neither beach is a swim beach, plan on your villa pool
  • Distance apart: about 30 to 35 km, 1.5 to 2 hours on a normal day
  • Bingin Beach in 2026: open, but still recovering from the July 2025 demolitions

What most guides get wrong about Bingin

Most Bingin guides online still describe a beach that no longer exists: a stack of cliffside warungs and guesthouses tumbling down to the sand, with cold Bintangs at every level. That Bingin ended on 21 July 2025, when the Bali Provincial Government began demolishing 48 structures on the cliff. Honeycombers reported in June 2026 that the buildings sat on state-owned land in a protected coastal area without valid permits.

The second thing they get wrong is the opposite mistake: writing Bingin off. The beach changed. The village did not. The lanes above the cliff still hold the cafes, the surf shops and the villas, and demand is climbing. Searches for "bingin villas" are up 171% year on year in Google Keyword Planner (Cabo Bali keyword research, October 2026). People are not choosing Bingin for a beach bar. They are choosing it for the cliffs, the wave and the quiet.

So our take: in 2026 you stay in Bingin for the village and the view, and treat the beach as a surf spot and a sunset walk, not a day out. Expect that and Bingin is one of the best stays in Bali. Expect the old postcard and you will be disappointed.

What is the vibe in Bingin vs Canggu?

Bingin is a cliffside surf village on the Bukit, a few minutes from Padang Padang and the rest of Uluwatu. The lanes are narrow, the pace is slow and evenings mean a sunset, dinner and bed. The crowd is mostly surfers and couples.

Canggu is the opposite energy: flat, dense and always moving. It is Bali's cafe, coworking and beach club capital, spread along Batu Bolong, Berawa and Echo Beach. The upside is choice. The downside is the roads.

Pererenan is the part of Canggu we point people to. Honeycombers' May 2026 guide describes it as more laid-back than Canggu, with the same boutique hotels, coffee and shops but less traffic and fewer party crowds. If you want Canggu's food scene without living on top of it, this is where to stay. For more on matching the area to your trip, see our where to stay in Bali guide.

Which has the better beach right now?

Honest answer: neither is a swimming beach.

Bingin Beach in 2026

Bingin has white sand under the cliffs, a rocky coral bottom and rock pools you can paddle in at high tide. Bali Untold visited in June 2026 and found the old staircase gone, replaced by a winding path through demolition leftovers, about 8 minutes from the parking area. On the sand there were a couple of shacks selling drinks and snacks, umbrella rental at IDR 100,000 a day and one surf company renting boards. No cafes, no restaurants, no toilets, no showers, no sunbeds.

The upside: it is much quieter. Tracks Magazine counted roughly a quarter of the bikes Bingin used to draw in May 2026, and locals said the wave has not changed at all.

What comes next: Badung Regency revealed a rebuild plan in May 2026, with 3 metre wide cliffside stairs, clean water, showers and public toilets in Phase 1 and a Phase 2 in 2027. Badung's public works head told The Bali Sun it would not be fully completed in 2026. There is no confirmed finish date, so do not plan around one.

Canggu's beaches

Canggu's beaches are black volcanic sand with strong currents, big waves and sharp coral in places, so you can paddle near the shore but not swim far out. Berawa is the loud one, home to FINNS and Atlas. Batu Bolong has The Lawn and the main surf scene. Echo Beach is mellower, with La Brisa. Pererenan Beach, about 500 metres west of Echo Beach, is quieter with fewer crowds and is popular for sunset.

Who wins: Canggu for beach clubs and facilities, Bingin for looks and quiet. If a calm swim matters, look at the other Bukit beaches in our best beaches in Uluwatu guide, and pick a villa with a proper pool either way.

Which is better for surfing?

Bingin is a left-hand reef break over shallow coral, short but fast and hollow when the swell lines up. Surf guides put the best window around mid tide on the drop, and rate it intermediate at minimum, advanced in practice. The lineup is crowded and dominated by locals. Impossibles is on the same stretch of reef and Padang Padang is a few minutes away, so experienced surfers have options within a short ride. The dry season, roughly April to October, is when the Bukit's reefs are at their best.

Canggu is the learner's coast. Old Man's is where most first lessons happen. Next door, Batu Bolong is an A-frame with lefts and rights over sand, reef and rock, but Bali.Live describes it as Bali's most crowded surf spot, with up to 90 people in the water on weekends. Echo Beach is faster and reefier, for confident surfers.

Who wins: Bingin if you can already surf reef, Canggu if you are learning. Staying in Bingin and still want lessons? Our Kala Surf review covers a surf camp option on the Bukit.

Where is the better food and nightlife?

This one is not close. Canggu has the deeper food scene. In Pererenan alone you have BAKED. for sourdough and croissants, ST. ALi for coffee, Shelter Pererenan for wood-fired Middle Eastern, Origen for Mexican and Optimist for modern Asian and natural wine. Our best restaurants in Canggu guide narrows it down.

Bingin is smaller but good. The Cashew Tree on Jalan Pantai Bingin is the village living room: an all-day, vegetarian-friendly cafe with morning yoga from Wednesday to Saturday and live music on Thursday nights. Alchemy, the plant-based restaurant that started in Ubud, has a Bingin branch on the same road, and Artisan runs one of its three Uluwatu cafes there too. For anything bigger, the rest of Uluwatu is a short ride away, covered in our best restaurants in Uluwatu guide.

Nightlife follows the same pattern. Canggu has the beach clubs and bars close together, from FINNS and Atlas in Berawa to The Lawn at Batu Bolong and La Brisa at Echo Beach; see our Canggu beach clubs guide. Bingin's big night is Thursday at The Cashew Tree. Anything later means a drive to the Uluwatu venues in our Uluwatu nightlife guide.

How far apart are they, and how do you get around?

This is the number that decides split trips. Canggu to the Uluwatu area is about 30 to 35 km, and a Bali Holiday Secrets guide updated in August 2026 puts it at 1.5 to 2 hours on a normal day: about 1 hour 15 minutes before 8am, 2.5 to 3 hours or more between 3pm and 6pm, and about 55 minutes after 9pm. The same guide quotes a private transfer at IDR 400,000 to 550,000 and a standard GrabCar or GoCar at IDR 220,000 to 280,000, more at surge. Our Canggu to Uluwatu guide has the route in detail.

Getting around Bingin: the cafe lanes around Jalan Pantai Bingin are walkable, but almost everything else needs a scooter or a driver. Grab and Gojek do run on the Bukit, but pickups are restricted in several spots, and at Bingin the roads are narrow enough that drivers often avoid coming all the way down. Book a driver for airport runs and late dinners. From the airport, plan on roughly 45 minutes to an hour.

Getting around Canggu: easier for apps, harder for traffic. Grab and Gojek are everywhere, though pickups are restricted right at Batu Bolong and the Berawa beachfront. Scooters rent for about IDR 70,000 to 150,000 a day, and you need an International Driving Permit plus a motorbike licence from home. The catch is congestion: The Nightly reported in June 2026 that a 5 km trip of 10 to 15 minutes can stretch past an hour at peak, with the rice-paddy shortcut often gridlocked too. From the airport, allow 45 minutes to over 2 hours.

The honest bear case for each

We have villas in both areas. Here is what we would tell a friend.

The case against Bingin

  • The beach is still a work site. Rubble, no toilets and a rough path down, with no confirmed finish date for the rebuild.
  • You will climb. Bingin is stairs and slopes everywhere, which matters with small kids, older parents or a bad knee.
  • You need wheels. Outside the cafe lanes, you depend on a scooter or a driver, and app pickups are unreliable.
  • Nights are quiet. Great if that is the point, a problem if you came to go out.
  • The wave is not for learners. Shallow reef and a local-heavy lineup.

The case against Canggu

  • Traffic is the price of admission. Short trips on the map regularly take far longer at peak hours.
  • Crowds in the water and on the sand. Up to 90 surfers at Batu Bolong on weekends.
  • Noise. Stay too close to Berawa or Batu Bolong and the beach clubs become your soundtrack.

Who should stay where?

  • Stay in Bingin if you are a couple, an experienced surfer or a repeat visitor, you want sunset on a cliff and a quiet villa, and you are happy to book a driver for the bigger outings.
  • Stay in Canggu (Pererenan) if it is your first trip, you are travelling as a group or working remotely, you want to learn to surf, or you want a different restaurant every night without planning transport.
  • Split it if you have seven nights or more. Do Pererenan first for food and energy, then Bingin to slow down, and treat the transfer as a travel day. Leave in the morning, never between 3pm and 6pm.

On the Bingin side, Cabo runs Luro Villas (read our Luro Villas review) and Las Mimosas. On the Canggu side, Vela Villas sits in Pererenan. For a wider shortlist, see our best villas in Uluwatu and Bingin and the full Uluwatu vs Canggu comparison.

Key takeaways

  • Bingin wins for couples, surfers and repeat visitors. Quiet, cliffs, sunsets, a serious wave.
  • Canggu wins for first-timers and groups. Food, beach clubs, apps and beginner surf.
  • Pererenan is the Canggu base we recommend. Same food scene, less traffic.
  • Bingin Beach changed in July 2025. 48 cliffside structures were demolished and the rebuild will not be finished in 2026.
  • Neither is a swim beach. Choose a villa with a good pool.
  • They are 1.5 to 2 hours apart. Pick one base, or split the trip with a proper travel day.

FAQs

Is Bingin or Canggu better for a first trip to Bali?

For most first-timers, Canggu, and specifically Pererenan. You get more cafes and restaurants within walking distance, easy Grab and Gojek, and beginner surf at Old Man's. Bingin rewards people who already know they want quiet cliffs, reef surf and a slower pace.

What happened to Bingin Beach?

On 21 July 2025 the Bali Provincial Government began demolishing 48 unpermitted cliffside structures at Bingin Beach. The beach stayed open. Mid-2026 reports found rubble, no toilets and no cafes on the sand, and a Badung Regency rebuild with wider stairs and toilets that will not be finished in 2026.

How far is Bingin from Canggu?

Roughly 30 to 35 km. On a normal day the Canggu to Uluwatu area drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, 2.5 to 3 hours or more between 3pm and 6pm, and about 55 minutes after 9pm. Treat it as a travel day, not a quick hop.

Can you swim at Bingin or Canggu?

Not really at either. Bingin has white sand over a rocky coral bottom, with rock pools you can paddle in at high tide. Canggu's black sand beaches have strong currents and big waves. Most guests in both areas swim in their villa pool and use the beach for sunsets and surf.

Is Bingin good for beginner surfers?

No. Bingin is a short, hollow left-hander over shallow coral reef, best around mid tide on the drop, and the lineup is crowded with experienced locals. Beginners are better off at Old Man's in Canggu, or taking lessons with a surf school on the Bukit's sandier beaches.

Can you get a Grab or Gojek in Bingin?

Yes, but pickups are patchy. Bingin's lanes are narrow and drivers often avoid going all the way down, so you may need to walk up to a main road. In Canggu, Grab and Gojek are everywhere, although pickups are restricted right at Batu Bolong and the Berawa beachfront.

Long story short

Pick Bingin if you want the Bali of cliffs, reef breaks and quiet nights, and you accept that the beach itself is still mid-rebuild. Pick Canggu, and stay in Pererenan, if you want choice on your doorstep and an easy first trip. If you have a week or more, do both, Canggu first and Bingin last, so your trip ends on the cliffs.
