Our guests ask us this every week. Here’s the honest answer — and the one surf camp in Uluwatu we actually recommend by name.
Our villas sit on the cliffs above some of the best surf in the world. Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, Thomas Beach — and one of the most common questions we get is: “where should I learn to surf?”
The honest answer depends on what kind of trip you’re having.
If you’re here for a week and surfing is the thing — you want to wake up, surf, eat, review footage, surf again, sleep, and repeat — you don’t want a private villa. You want a surf camp. Specifically, you want Kala Surf.
If you’re here for the villa experience and want a couple of surf lessons on the side, we can arrange that too. But this article is about the first group — the people whose whole trip is about getting better at surfing. For them, Kala is the best option on the Bukit, and we recommend them by name.
Why Kala, Specifically

There are dozens of surf schools on the Bukit. Most operate the same way: meet at the beach, rent a board, paddle out, hope for the best. Kala is different because it’s a proper surf camp — your whole day is built around getting better at surfing.
It’s surf, eat, sleep, repeat. That’s the model. You wake up, check the tide with your coach, surf the best break for the conditions, come back for breakfast, review your footage, eat lunch, go again in the afternoon, skate the bowl or hit the gym in between, and do it all again tomorrow. Everything is structured around progression — not just having fun in the whitewash for an hour.
They’re based in Uluwatu, not Canggu. Most surf schools in Bali are in Canggu or Seminyak, where the waves are beginner-friendly but the experience is crowded and generic. Kala is right here on the Bukit, walking distance from the same world-class breaks that put Uluwatu on the map. You’re learning to surf where the best surfers in the world come to surf.
Coaching is personalised, not group-and-forget. Their coaches film your sessions and break down the footage with you afterwards. That’s rare at the lesson level — most schools just get you standing up and call it done. Kala treats it as actual progression, which is why guests who book a few days of lessons with them come back noticeably better.
The facilities are genuine. Saltwater infinity pool, gym, skate bowl, on-site restaurant, pool bar. Between sessions you’re hanging out at the camp, not sitting in a car park waiting for your next lesson.
They cater to every level. Complete beginners, intermediate surfers wanting to progress, and experienced surfers who want local guiding to the Bukit’s reef breaks. The guiding option is particularly valuable — Uluwatu’s waves are world-class but they’re not forgiving, and having someone who knows the lineup, the tides, and the entry points makes a real difference.
Who Should Stay at Kala vs. Who Should Book a Villa
Stay at Kala if:
- Your trip is about surfing — you want to progress, not just try it once
- You want the community — other surfers, shared meals, sunset beers, stories
- You want coaching structure — daily sessions, video analysis, progression tracking
- You’re a solo traveller or couple who want to meet people
- You want everything in one place — accommodation, food, coaching, gym, pool
Book a villa if:
- You want privacy — your own pool, your own space, your own schedule
- You’re travelling as a family or group who aren’t all surfing
- You want the luxury experience — clifftop views, design-led interiors, concierge service
- Surfing is one part of your trip, not the whole trip
- You want a surf lesson or two, not a full camp programme
Both are great options. They’re just for different people. And if you’re in a villa and want a day session at Kala, that works too — you don’t need to stay at the camp to use their coaching.
Why We’re Recommending Somewhere That Also Sells Accommodation
Because we’re not competing for the same guest. Someone who wants to spend a week in a surf camp eating, sleeping, and breathing surf is not the same person who books a luxury clifftop villa with a private pool. Different trip, different priorities, different budget in many cases.
We’d rather send you to the right place for your trip than try to convince you a villa is what you need when what you actually want is a surf camp. And if you come back to Bali next year wanting the villa experience, you’ll remember who was straight with you.
Practical Details
- Location: Pecatu, Uluwatu — walking distance from Thomas Beach, short ride to Padang Padang and the main Uluwatu breaks
- What they are: A full surf camp — accommodation, daily coaching, video analysis, yoga, gym, skate bowl, restaurant, pool bar. Everything under one roof
- Accommodation: Dorms (mixed and girls-only), private rooms, deluxe rooms, and a family setup with a king room plus kids’ bunk room
- Levels: Complete beginners through to experienced surfers wanting reef break guiding
- Booking: Direct through kala.surf — multi-day camp packages are the core offering
- Instagram: @kalasurf — worth checking for the vibe before you book
- Day sessions: If you’re staying elsewhere (like one of our villas) and just want coaching, ask them about day lesson options
Pro tip for guests. If you’re staying at one of our villas and want to book Kala, let our concierge team know — we can help coordinate timing, transport, and make sure the logistics fit around your stay. Surf conditions on the Bukit are tide-dependent, so the best session time changes daily. Our team and Kala’s team are in contact and can align on the best plan for your dates.
Other Surf Options on the Bukit
Kala is our top recommendation, but for completeness:
- Private coaches: Independent surf coaches operate across Uluwatu. Quality varies widely. Ask us for a vetted recommendation if you want 1-on-1 coaching outside of Kala.
- Board rentals: Available at most beach access points (Bingin, Padang Padang, Thomas Beach). Fine for experienced surfers who just need a board. Not a substitute for proper coaching if you’re learning.
- Canggu surf schools: If you’re heading to Canggu for the day, there are dozens of options there — but the waves are different (beach breaks vs reef breaks) and the experience is much more crowded.
For our money, if you’re staying in Uluwatu, learn in Uluwatu. The waves are better, the crowds are thinner, and the coaching at Kala is the best we’ve found on the Bukit.
