Canggu vs Ubud: Which Should You Stay In? (2026)

Canggu vs Ubud: Which Should You Stay In? (2026)

Updated 29 October 2026 | 12 min read | By Rissa Prima, Digital Marketing Manager, Cabo Bali

The short answer

Canggu vs Ubud comes down to one question: do you want the sea every day, or the jungle every day? For most trips of a week or less, we would base in Canggu and do Ubud as an early day trip, because the drive is 50 to 60 minutes before 7:30am and Ubud's best sights are morning sights. Stay in Ubud instead if temples, wellness and quiet evenings are the whole point of your trip.

Who this is not for. If you want calm, clear water to swim in, neither area will suit you. Canggu's beaches are surf beaches with black sand and strong currents, and Ubud has no beach at all. Splitting your time with the Bukit instead? Read our Ubud vs Uluwatu comparison.

Quick answer

  • Canggu = surf, cafes, sunsets, nightlife. Black sand beaches, beach clubs, a big food scene, heavy traffic.
  • Ubud = jungle, temples, wellness. Rice terraces, the Monkey Forest, yoga, fine dining. No beach.
  • Distance: about 30 to 35 km, 50 to 60 minutes early morning, two hours or more at rush hour.
  • Day trip: Canggu to Ubud works if you leave by 7:30am and head back before 4pm.
  • Weather: Ubud is a couple of degrees cooler and much more likely to get rain.
  • Want calm in Canggu? Stay in Pererenan, just west, where rice fields are still close by.

What do most Canggu vs Ubud guides get wrong?

Most comparisons treat this as a choice between two bases of equal weight: beach town or jungle town, pick one and stay there. That framing skips the most useful fact about this particular pair. Canggu and Ubud are close enough to share. Ubud to Uluwatu is a cross-island slog of two hours or more. Canggu to Ubud is roughly 30 to 35 km, and in the early morning it takes 50 to 60 minutes by car. That makes a day trip a real plan here.

The second thing guides skip: it only works one way. A Canggu base with an Ubud day works because Ubud's best sights are early sights. An Ubud base with a Canggu beach day works badly, because you drive to a surf beach that is poor for swimming, then sit in two hours of evening traffic.

So the real question is whether Ubud is a place you want to visit or to wake up in. Most people want to visit. Some should wake up there, and we say who below.

What is the vibe in Canggu vs Ubud?

Canggu is Bali's busiest beach scene. Surfers, cafes, coworking, gyms, beach clubs and a young international crowd, packed into a few kilometres of coast. The downside: narrow roads, scooters nose to tail at sunset, and local authorities admitting in June 2026 there is still no quick fix. A planned bypass has no construction timeline yet.

Ubud is Bali's cultural heart. Temples, art, dance, rice terraces and river valleys, with a wellness industry on top. Early on a weekday in the Sayan valley it is the Bali people picture before they arrive. At midday the centre is crowded, commercial and slow. In both places the trick is the same: stay outside the busy core and time your moves.

Picture an ordinary afternoon. In Canggu: a surf, the pool, a sunset drink on the sand. In Ubud: a spa, a book, rain on a jungle roof. Pick the afternoon you want twenty of.

Does Canggu have good beaches, and does Ubud have any?

Canggu has beaches, but they are probably not the beaches you are imagining. All of them are black volcanic sand, the waves are strong and the currents are unpredictable, so swimming is not ideal anywhere along this coast. What they are good for is surfing and sunsets.

  • Batu Bolong is the beginner and longboard beach, with board hire, surf schools and Old Man's for a drink after.
  • Echo Beach has punchier waves for intermediate surfers, and La Brisa beach club sits right on it.
  • Berawa has more powerful, more consistent waves and the big beach clubs, including Finns and Atlas.
  • Pererenan is the quieter beach to the west, with an advanced wave and a few warungs rather than clubs.

Ubud has no beach at all. The nearest sand is on the coast, at least an hour away. For beach people that usually settles it. See our guide to the best beach clubs in Canggu.

What can Ubud give you that Canggu cannot?

Culture. Canggu has one great sight nearby, the sea temple of Tanah Lot, about 30 to 45 minutes away by car. Foreign adults paid IDR 75,000 in 2026, after a planned price rise was postponed. Ubud has a cluster of major sights within about half an hour.

  • Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. A temple complex of about 12.5 hectares with more than 1,200 long-tailed macaques. Adult tickets for foreign visitors rose to IDR 130,000 on 1 April 2026. Keep sunglasses off your head.
  • Campuhan Ridge Walk. About 2 km along a grassy ridge, 20 to 30 minutes each way, and free. Go at first light.
  • Tegallalang Rice Terraces. Lovely at dawn. By midday it is swings, drones and queues, so go early or skip it.
  • Tirta Empul. The holy spring temple about 14 km from Ubud, roughly 30 minutes by road. Adults pay IDR 75,000.
  • Mount Batur sunrise. Tour operators' published pickups are around 2:15am from Ubud and 1:30am from Canggu. A real point for Ubud.

Then there is wellness. Ubud has yoga studios, retreats and spas on a scale Canggu only partly matches, and a daily 7am class is far easier when you are already there.

Which has better food, cafes and nightlife?

On fine dining, Ubud wins clearly. Locavore NXT was ranked No. 44 in Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2026, with tasting menus from IDR 1,950,000++ a person. Mozaic in Kedewatan starts from IDR 1,100,000++. For a cheaper night, Hujan Locale in central Ubud has mains from IDR 140,000++.

On everyday eating, Canggu wins. The cafe scene is huge: Crate Cafe, Revolver, Hungry Bird and Blacklist Coffee Roasters are just a start, and in Pererenan ST. ALi and Bokashi are a short ride from the villas. Our best cafes in Canggu and best restaurants in Canggu guides cover the shortlist.

On nightlife it is no contest. Canggu has the bars, the beach clubs and the late nights. Ubud goes quiet early, which is what some people are paying for.

Is Ubud cooler and wetter than Canggu?

Yes. Ubud sits higher, in the uplands, and runs about a couple of degrees cooler than the south coast, with daytime highs of roughly 27 to 30 degrees in the dry season and evenings that drop to around 20 to 23 degrees. It is also much more likely to rain in Ubud than in the southern resort areas. That rain is the reason Ubud is so green.

It matters most in the wet season. A rainy week in Ubud means a lot of time under a roof: lovely if you planned for it, frustrating if you planned a hike every day. Torn and travelling in the wet months? That is a nudge towards the coast.

How far apart are they, and can you day-trip Ubud?

Canggu to Ubud is roughly 30 to 35 km with no toll road, so the clock matters more than the map. Published 2026 drive times are about 50 to 60 minutes early in the morning, 75 to 95 minutes at midday and 100 to 130 minutes in the 4:30pm to 7:30pm peak. Coming back is similar: about 1 hour 10 minutes early, 1 hour 40 minutes at midday and 2 to 2.5 hours or more in the evening rush. A ride-hailing car costs roughly IDR 200,000 to 300,000 each way, and a private car and driver for a 10-hour day is around USD 50 to 65.

The Cabo Bali Ubud Day-Trip Rule. From Canggu or Pererenan, leave by 7:30am, plan no more than three stops, and start back before 4pm or after a 9pm dinner. Done that way, Ubud is about an hour each way. Done any other way, it can cost four or five hours in the car. Cabo Bali, 2026.

The day we would plan for a guest on the Canggu side:

  1. 7:00am | Leave the villa. In Ubud around 8am.
  2. 8:00am | Campuhan Ridge Walk or Tegallalang. Pick one, before the heat and crowds.
  3. 10:00am | Monkey Forest or Tirta Empul. Again, pick one. Tirta Empul is about 30 minutes from central Ubud.
  4. 12:30pm | Long lunch in Ubud.
  5. 3:00pm to 3:30pm | Head back. Beat the evening rush, swim before sunset.

Some app drivers cancel late bookings, so book the return. For times between every main area, see our Bali travel times guide, and for what a fair day rate looks like, our private driver cost guide. If you plan to ride yourself, read our scooter rental guide first.

Is Canggu or Ubud cheaper?

Neither is clearly cheaper, and cost should not decide this. Real numbers, checked October 2026:

  • Yoga drop-in: around IDR 135,000 to 155,000 in Canggu against IDR 150,000 to 180,000 in Ubud.
  • Airport transfer: IDR 350,000 to 500,000 to Canggu against IDR 450,000 to 650,000 to Ubud.
  • Sights: Ubud's paid sights add up. The Monkey Forest is IDR 130,000 per adult and Tirta Empul IDR 75,000.
  • Fine dining: Ubud's top tasting menus run IDR 1,100,000++ to 1,950,000++ a person.

The bigger swing is the villa, and both areas run from simple to very expensive. Booking direct rather than through an online travel agency avoids its fees.

Who should stay in Ubud, and who should stay in Canggu?

We host guests on the Canggu side, so you might expect us to send everyone there. We do not.

Stay in Ubud if: you are coming for yoga, a retreat or a reset; temples and craft are the point of the trip; you want quiet evenings; or the Mount Batur sunrise is on your list. A Canggu base would mean driving to everything you came for.

Stay in Canggu if: you surf or want to learn; you want sunsets on the sand and a big choice of places to eat; you are a group or family wanting a pool villa near cafes; or you have a week or less.

Split it if: you have eight nights or more. Three or four nights in Ubud first, then the coast to finish. Leave Ubud in the morning and the transfer is painless.

The bear case for Canggu. If you hate traffic, construction and crowds, central Canggu will annoy you, and a jungle villa in Sayan may make you happier than any beach. Better to hear it now than on day two.

Where on the Canggu side should you stay?

If what draws you to Ubud is calm and green, but you still want the sea, look at Pererenan. It sits just west of Canggu, has a quieter village feel with rice fields still close by, and Echo Beach is about 10 minutes away by car. You get the cafes and beach without living on the busiest roads.

That is why our Canggu-side villas are in Pererenan. If you want to explore the area first, see our Pererenan guide, or our wider where to stay in Bali guide if you are still choosing between regions. Comparing the coast instead? Try Canggu vs Seminyak or Uluwatu vs Canggu.

Key takeaways

  • Canggu is sea, surf, cafes and nightlife. Ubud is jungle, temples, wellness and fine dining.
  • Neither is a swimming holiday. Canggu's beaches are surf beaches, and Ubud has no sea.
  • They are close. About 50 to 60 minutes apart early in the morning, but two hours or more at rush hour.
  • A week or less? Base in Canggu or Pererenan and day-trip Ubud: out by 7:30am, back before 4pm.
  • Wellness, culture or Batur first? Stay in Ubud. It is the right call for those trips.
  • Eight nights or more? Ubud first, then the coast.

FAQs

Is Canggu or Ubud better for a first trip to Bali?

For a week or less, Canggu is the easier base: 35 to 50 minutes from the airport, with Ubud as a day trip if you leave by 7:30am. Choose Ubud if temples, rice terraces and wellness are the main reason you are coming.

How far is Canggu from Ubud?

Roughly 30 to 35 km: about 50 to 60 minutes by car early in the morning, 75 to 95 minutes at midday and two hours or more in the evening rush. There is no toll road, so timing matters more than distance.

Can you do Ubud as a day trip from Canggu?

Yes. Leave Canggu by 7:30am, see two or three things, and start back before 4pm or after dinner. Leaving in the late afternoon is the mistake, because the evening drive can take more than two hours.

Does Ubud have a beach?

No. Ubud is inland, with jungle, rivers and rice fields but no sea, and the coast is at least an hour away. If you want the ocean every day, stay on the coast and visit Ubud for the day.

Is Canggu good for swimming?

Not really. Canggu's beaches are black volcanic sand with strong waves and currents, better for surfing than swimming. Your villa pool is where you will actually swim.

Is Ubud cooler than Canggu?

Yes, a little. Ubud runs about a couple of degrees cooler, with evenings around 20 to 23 degrees, and gets noticeably more rain than the south coast.

Is Canggu or Ubud more expensive?

They are close. A yoga drop-in is around IDR 135,000 to 155,000 in Canggu against IDR 150,000 to 180,000 in Ubud, and the airport transfer is cheaper to Canggu. How you spend your days matters far more.
