Our take, restaurant by restaurant

Canggu is not one place to eat. It is four strips with different personalities: Batu Bolong has the density and the noise, Berawa has the wine bars and the families, Tanah Barak and Batu Mejan sit in between, and Pererenan is where the best cooks moved when Batu Bolong got expensive. We have grouped the picks by what you want from the night, with the area on each so you can match it to where you are staying. Prices are indicative mains as of October 2026, before tax and service.

Santanera: the best big night out in Canggu

Jl. Tanah Barak No. 55-57. Latin American cooking with a Mediterranean hand, a farm-to-table kitchen and a rooftop cocktail bar. Order the empanadas, the foie gras parfait and whatever the dry-aged fish is that night; mains start around IDR 180,000. The verdict: the most complete restaurant in Canggu, food, room, drinks and service all at the same level. The caveat is the room itself: it is big, busy and loud by 8pm, so it is a celebration dinner, not a quiet one. Book ahead on Friday and Saturday.

Shelter Pererenan: the best plate per rupiah

A wine toast at dinner at Shelter in Pererenan
Shelter, Pererenan. Photo: Shelter

Jl. Pantai Pererenan. Charcoal and wood-fired Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking in a rattan garden, from chef and co-owner Stephen Moore. Named one of Indonesia's top 10 restaurants at the Prestige Gourmet Gold Awards 2025. Order the smoked baba ghanoush, the slow-cooked lamb shoulder and the wood-roasted chocolate dessert; mains from about IDR 110,000. The verdict: if we could only eat at one place in Pererenan, this is it. The caveat: it is booked out most evenings, and walk-ins after 7pm usually leave disappointed. Sunday barbecues and vinyl nights run weekly.

Meimei: the hardest table worth fighting for

Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No. 87. Wood and charcoal Southeast Asian barbecue with natural wine and cocktails built on local ingredients. Order the 15-hour short rib with spiced caramel, the tiger prawns in shrimp-head gulai and the Papuan crab toast; mains from about IDR 175,000. The verdict: the most exciting cooking on Batu Bolong right now, and one of the few kitchens open into the early hours. The caveat: reservations through SevenRooms are close to essential, and Batu Bolong traffic means arriving on time takes planning.

Ulekan: the best Indonesian sit-down dinner

Berawa. Traditional Indonesian dishes with a modern hand, from the team behind Milk & Madu, with house-made sambal ground to order. Order the beef rendang, sate lilit and pepes ikan. The verdict: the easiest way to eat properly Indonesian food in a comfortable room, and the rendang is one of the best in the area. The caveat: you pay restaurant prices for warung dishes, two to three times what the same plate costs at a warung. Traditional dance performances run Wednesday and Friday at 7:30pm, which kids love.

Bar Vera: the Pererenan date night

Jl. Pantai Pererenan No. 84. A small European bistro and wine bar with cosmopolitan energy. Order the hamachi tartlet, the goat's cheese beignet and the charcoal chicken; mains from about IDR 160,000. The verdict: the best room in Pererenan for two people and a bottle. The caveat: it is intimate, which means tight, and groups of more than four are better off at Shelter down the road.

Mosto: natural wine and a neo-bistro kitchen

Jl. Pantai Berawa. Billed as Indonesia's first dedicated natural wine bar, with 70-plus low-intervention wines and a short, produce-led menu. Order the tagliolini and the koji chicken schnitzel; plates from about IDR 100,000. It is one of our favourites in Canggu: the staff are exceptionally well trained and the wine list is a pleasure to work through. Central in Berawa, it works for a group or a date before a night out. The verdict: the best place in Berawa to drink well and eat small. The caveat: natural wine divides people, and small plates add up fast, so a full dinner costs more than the menu suggests.

Lulu Bistrot: French classics and live jazz

Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No. 72. A Paris-style bistro with oysters, terrine and lamb bourguignon, and live jazz most evenings; mains from about IDR 140,000. The verdict: the safe pick when a group cannot agree, because everyone knows what they are ordering. The caveat: you are paying close to European prices for European food, and the island has fresher things to eat.

Sababa: Middle Eastern mezze for groups

Jl. Pantai Berawa. Levantine sharing plates: lamb kefta, falafel, halloumi, grilled calamari; dishes from about IDR 80,000. The verdict: the best group dinner in Berawa for the money, order eight plates for six people and everyone leaves happy. The caveat: the format punishes solo diners and couples, who end up ordering too much or too little.

Origen: Mexican with handmade tortillas

Jl. Pantai Pererenan No. 123. Proper Mexican with tortillas made in-house and bold interiors. Order the tuna tostada, the quesabirria tacos and the churros. The verdict: the most authentic Mexican cooking in the Canggu area. The caveat: it is priced like a destination restaurant, not a taqueria, so do not walk in expecting a cheap taco night.

Zali: home-style Lebanese in Pererenan

Jl. Pantai Pererenan. A warm, family-feel Lebanese kitchen: hummus, tabbouleh, falafel, kofte and manoushe from a stone oven. The verdict: the honest weeknight dinner in Pererenan, good food without the scene. The caveat: the space is small, so book for anything over four people.

Ji Terrace by the Sea: the sunset table

Hotel Tugu Bali, on Batu Bolong beach. A rooftop terrace serving Japanese and Asian fusion, with one of the best sunset views in Canggu; plates from about IDR 90,000. The verdict: come for the hour around sunset with a drink and a few rolls. The caveat: you are paying for the view, and once the light is gone there are better dinners within ten minutes. If you want a sunset with a pool and a DJ instead, see our Canggu beach clubs guide.

Milk & Madu Berawa: the one that works with kids

Jl. Pantai Berawa. An all-day family favourite: creative breakfasts, lava-stone pizzas and a menu that keeps every age happy; most mains IDR 80,000 to 150,000. The verdict: the most reliable family meal in Canggu. The caveat: it is a crowd-pleaser, not a destination dinner, and brunch on weekends is loud and full.

Warung Bu Mi: the best cheap lunch

Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong. A cabinet-style warung: point at the rice, proteins and vegetables you want and pay by the plate, usually IDR 30,000 to 60,000. The verdict: the best-value meal on this list, and a reminder that Canggu does not have to cost IDR 1 million a night. The caveat: zero ambience, a lunchtime queue, and the sambal is properly hot, so ask before you spoon.

Pro tip: eat on your side of Canggu. The distances are short and the evening traffic is not. Between about 6pm and 8pm the roads linking Pererenan, Batu Bolong and Berawa can turn a ten-minute ride into forty. Pick dinner by where your villa is, book the one big night across town, and eat locally the rest of the week.

What dinner in Canggu actually costs

The Cabo Bali Canggu Dinner Benchmark, October 2026: a main course runs IDR 30,000 to 60,000 at a warung, IDR 80,000 to 140,000 at a mid-range restaurant and IDR 160,000 to 250,000 at the destination tables, before tax and service. Ulekan, Origen and Zali do not publish a consistent starting price, so we have left them out of the table rather than guess. Most sit-down restaurants in Canggu add Bali's 10 percent restaurant tax plus a service charge, shown on menus as "++". In practice that adds roughly 15 to 21 percent to the bill.

What most Canggu food guides get wrong

Most Canggu restaurant lists are 20 to 30 places long, all on Batu Bolong and all at destination prices. That is not how anyone actually eats here for a week. Three things we tell guests instead:

  1. Book three, not ten. Pick two or three destination dinners for the week, book them before you land, and leave the other nights open for warungs and the place round the corner.
  2. Pererenan is the value play. Shelter, Bar Vera, Origen and Zali cook at Batu Bolong level for less, with less noise and easier parking.
  3. The menu price is not the bill. The "++" adds roughly a fifth, and cocktails at IDR 90,000 to 130,000 each double a dinner faster than the food does.

We also checked for closures. As of October 2026 every restaurant on this list is open and taking bookings; if one closes, we will update this page.
