How long does it take to get from Canggu to Uluwatu?

Canggu to Uluwatu is a 30 to 35 km drive that takes 60 to 75 minutes off-peak and 2 to 3 hours at the evening rush. The distance never changes; the clock does. Almost every minute you lose is lost in three places: Sunset Road, the Simpang Dewa Ruci junction and airport underpass, and the climb through Jimbaran onto the Bukit. Uluwatu to Canggu is the same road in reverse, with the same rush hours.

Guide data checked in August to October 2026 lines up closely: about 1 hour 15 minutes leaving before 8am, 1.5 to 2 hours through the middle of the day, 2.5 to 3 hours or more between 3pm and 6pm, and under an hour after 9pm. By scooter, take 15 to 30 minutes off each, except at peak, when a bike filters through and a car does not.

Is a private driver worth it from Canggu to Uluwatu?

A private driver is the best way to move between Canggu and Uluwatu with luggage, a group or a fixed check-in time, at roughly IDR 350,000 to 550,000 one way. You pay about IDR 100,000 to 200,000 more than a Grab car, and you get a confirmed pickup at a fixed time, room for bags and surfboards, and a driver who knows the back roads around the Canggu shortcut and Jimbaran.

Our view: for the transfer day itself, this is the only option we recommend without caveats. If you want to stop on the way, at a beach club in Seminyak or lunch in Jimbaran, book a full day instead. Full-day rates in Bali sit at about IDR 700,000 to 900,000 for 8 to 10 hours including fuel, which is less than two one-way transfers plus a separate ride back. Our Bali private driver cost guide breaks down day rates, airport zones and tipping.

Staying with Cabo Bali? The concierge can arrange a driver for your transfer between villas, timed around check-out and check-in, so the car is waiting rather than being hailed.

How much is a Grab or Gojek from Canggu to Uluwatu?

A GrabCar or GoCar from Canggu to Uluwatu costs roughly IDR 220,000 to 320,000 one way, rising past IDR 400,000 on surge. It is the cheapest car option and works well in the Canggu direction, because pickups in most of Canggu are straightforward. Larger XL cars for 5 to 6 people quote around IDR 310,000 to 380,000.

What most guides get wrong is the return. On the Bukit, local transport groups block many app pickups in Uluwatu, Bingin and Padang Padang. The app will drop you there without a problem; getting collected for the ride back is where it fails, especially from beaches, the temple and beach-club car parks. It is a local arrangement, not a government ban, and it is enforced. Our Grab vs Gojek guide covers where the pickup zones are and how to get around them. The short version: pre-book the return, or walk out to a main road before you open the app.

Should you ride a scooter from Canggu to Uluwatu?

Riding a scooter from Canggu to Uluwatu takes about 50 to 60 minutes off-peak and is only sensible for experienced riders without luggage. A bike filters through the jams, so at rush hour it can beat a car by an hour. The price is the route: Sunset Road and the Bypass carry heavy trucks and fast traffic, and they are where most serious tourist scooter accidents happen. Helmet-detection cameras now operate along Sunset Road, and police checks for a licence and International Driving Permit are routine.

Our stance: ride it for a day trip, never for a villa move. A GrabBike or GoRide with a professional rider, roughly IDR 95,000 to 160,000, gets you the filtering advantage without you riding the Bypass. If you are moving between Cabo Bali villas, the scooter itself can follow you through our partner, so you do not ride it across the island or rent twice. Details in our Bali scooter rental guide.

Is there a boat, shuttle or tour between Canggu and Uluwatu?

A scheduled speedboat shuttle runs between Nelayan Beach in Canggu and Padang Padang Beach in Uluwatu in about 35 to 40 minutes, for around IDR 200,000 to 255,000 per person. It is the fastest crossing on the island and a genuinely good trip for a day out. It is also backpack-only with no suitcases, has a wet landing at both ends, a few departures a day, and is cancelled when the sea is rough. You still need a short ride to and from each beach.

There is no public bus that makes this run usefully. Shared tourist shuttles mostly connect the airport, Kuta, Sanur and Ubud rather than Canggu to the Bukit. If you want to see Uluwatu from a Canggu base, a full-day driver or a sunset tour that includes the Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple is the realistic choice.

Where does the traffic build between Canggu and Uluwatu?

Three choke points decide your journey time between Canggu and Uluwatu: Sunset Road, the Simpang Dewa Ruci junction and airport underpass, and Jimbaran.

  1. Sunset Road and the Bypass. The main spine from Kerobokan towards the airport. Afternoon and evening traffic stacks here first, and the side-road shortcuts out of Canggu feed straight into it.
  2. Simpang Dewa Ruci and the airport underpass. The big junction near Kuta where Sunset Road, the Bypass and the airport road meet, then the underpass beside the runway. Airport traffic adds to it all day, and most at flight peaks.
  3. Jimbaran and the climb onto the Bukit. Jalan Raya Uluwatu is one main road up the peninsula. There is no shortcut around it, and at sunset it fills with traffic heading for Uluwatu Temple and the beach clubs.

The toll road across the bay is often suggested as a bypass. It rarely saves time on this route, because you still have to reach it through the same junction.

Pro tip | leave by 2pm or after 8pm. The single biggest variable in this drive is when you leave Canggu. Out by 2pm, you are on the Bukit before the sunset rush climbs Jalan Raya Uluwatu. Leave at 4pm and the same 35 km can take three hours. If your check-out is 11am and your Uluwatu check-in is 3pm, go straight after check-out and have lunch on the Bukit, not in Canggu.

When is the best time to leave?

The best time to drive between Canggu and Uluwatu is before 8am, between about 11am and 2pm, or after 8pm. Avoid 7:30am to 10am on weekdays, when school and commuter traffic hit the Bypass, and 3pm to 7pm every day, when sunset traffic and the evening commute overlap. Heading to Uluwatu Temple for sunset? Leave Canggu by 2:30pm at the latest.

How do you get from Canggu to Ubud, and back?

Canggu to Ubud is about 30 to 35 km and takes 50 to 60 minutes leaving before 8am, 75 to 95 minutes at midday and up to about 2 hours in the evening. A Grab or Gojek car costs roughly IDR 200,000 to 300,000; a bike roughly IDR 60,000 to 125,000. The road runs inland through Denpasar's northern edge and the craft villages, so the same early-start rule applies.

Ubud to Canggu has the same catch as Uluwatu. Central Ubud restricts app pickups, so a cheap ride in becomes a hard ride out. Pre-book the return, or walk to a main road junction first. For a day trip from Canggu, a full-day private driver at IDR 700,000 to 900,000 beats two app rides, because you will want stops at the rice terraces, a waterfall and a temple, and the car waits at each one.
