Scooter Rental in Bali 2026: An Honest Guide From People Who Live Here

Scooter Rental in Bali 2026: An Honest Guide From People Who Live Here

A scooter is the best way to see Bali. It’s also the fastest way to end your holiday early if you don’t know what you’re doing.

We run a villa management company on the Bukit Peninsula and in Canggu. Every week we welcome guests who want to rent a scooter to explore the island — and we’ve seen both versions of how it goes. The trip that ends with sunset rides to Nyang Nyang and dinner at a warung nobody else has found. And the trip that ends with a broken ankle and a hospital bill.

This is the honest version of what you need to know in 2026. No affiliate-speak. No selling you something you don’t need. Just what actually matters when you rent a scooter here.

Last updated: 18 April 2026 — prices, regulations and rental comparisons verified current.

Note on pricing: all prices shown in both Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) and US Dollars (USD) using ~IDR 17,000 = USD 1 (April 2026). Check current rates before you travel.

Quick Answers

  • IDP with motorcycle endorsement required. Car licence alone is not enough. Fine for no licence: IDR 1,000,000 (USD 60).
  • Budget IDR 130,000–200,000/day (USD 8–12) for a quality automatic. Weekly rates 30–40% cheaper. Never leave your passport as deposit.
  • Best rental: Bikago — fully insured, villa delivery, 24/7 support, pay by card. Cabo Bali guests get preferential rates.
  • Recommended bike for confident riders unsure what to pick: Yamaha Nmax. More on bike choice by trip type below.
  • Travel insurance: most exclude two-wheelers. SafetyWing, World Nomads Explorer, Heymondo all offer scooter add-ons.
  • Never ridden before? Bali is not the place to learn. Use a driver for the first few days.

The Rules in 2026

There’s been a lot of noise about Bali “banning” tourist scooter rentals. To be clear: there is no ban. What there is, in 2026, is much stricter enforcement of existing laws.

You Need an International Driving Permit (IDP) — With Motorcycle Entitlement

An IDP is a translation of your home country licence into a format recognised internationally. Your home country licence must include motorcycle entitlement, and your IDP must reflect that same category. A car-only licence is not enough — it never was, but in 2026 it’s actively enforced.

Helmet Law Is Non-Negotiable

Both driver and passenger must wear a securely-fastened helmet. Fine: IDR 250,000 (USD 15). Reputable rentals include fitted helmets — if they don’t, go elsewhere.

Documents You Must Carry at All Times

  • Your home country driving licence (physical)
  • Your International Driving Permit (physical booklet)
  • The bike’s registration papers (STNK) — your rental gives you this

How to Rent Without Getting Scammed

Red Flag 1: Passport as Deposit

Never. Walk away. Reputable companies take a photo of your passport and visa — physical passport never leaves your hand.

Red Flag 2: No Insurance

Most street rentals have none. Any scratch, any accident, you pay. Inflated “repair costs” are how they really make money.

Red Flag 3: Pre-Existing Damage Scams

Before you ride off, take a 30-second video walkaround. Every scratch, every ding. WhatsApp it to yourself for a timestamp.

Red Flag 4: Poor Bike Condition

Check: brakes (firm, not spongy), tyres (tread depth), lights (all working), horn, mirrors, fuel level.

Red Flag 5: No Contract, Cash Only

A legitimate rental provides a written contract and accepts card payment. Cash-only with no paperwork = no accountability.

We’ve partnered with Bikago to secure preferential rates for Cabo Bali villa guests. If you’re staying at one of our villas in Uluwatu, Bingin, Canggu, or Nyang Nyang, your guest concierge pre-arranges delivery via our partner link — no paperwork on arrival. If you’re moving between Cabo villas mid-trip (Canggu to Uluwatu for instance), we handle cross-villa drop-off so you don’t re-rent.

What Our Guests Say About Bikago

We don’t partner with Bikago because it’s convenient for us. We partner because guests keep telling us it worked.

★★★★★ Recent Cabo guest, Marevita Villas:

“We texted a few other bike vendors to verify we were getting the best option, and they were all quoting IDR 200,000/day for an Nmax in Uluwatu. Bikago was not only the best value at IDR 150,000 — the bike and helmet were brand new.”

★★★★★ Recent Cabo guest, multi-villa stay across Canggu and Uluwatu:

“Super handy using Bikago. Normally I have to rent a new scooter at every villa I stay at between Canggu and Uluwatu. This time it was seamless with one company — they even dropped it to me in Uluwatu and picked it up from Canggu. No faff.”

★★★★★ Recent Cabo guest, Vela Villas:

“Seamless experience. Loved that I could pay with card.”

Which Scooter Should You Rent? Our Recommendations by Trip Type

The short version: if you’re a confident rider and don’t know what to pick, get the Yamaha Nmax. It’s the most comfortable for two adults, the best long-term option, and the most practical daily-driver for Bali’s mix of hills, coast roads, and town traffic.

If that’s not you, here’s how we’d match bike to person:

🏄 18–25 Backpacker (Saving Money) — Honda Vario 160cc

The Vario is the sweet spot for anyone on a budget who still wants a capable bike. Handles everything the Nmax does for meaningfully less money. Fuel-efficient. Everywhere serviced. No reason to go smaller unless you’re a total beginner.

🌸 Beginners, Shorter Riders, First-Timers — Honda Scoopy 110cc

The Scoopy is smaller, lighter, and easy to touch the ground on when stopped — the single biggest confidence factor for new or smaller riders. Also the “cute” bike if you want something that photographs well. Fine for local trips around Canggu or the Bukit.

💪 Confident Rider, Unsure What to Pick — Yamaha Nmax 155cc

Our default recommendation. Most comfortable seat for two adults, enough power for any route on the island, and you’ll actually enjoy riding it for longer stretches. If you’re staying a month or more, this is the one that won’t tire you out.

👑 Couples Riding Together Daily, Taller Riders — Honda PCX 160cc

A step up from the Nmax in seat height and comfort. If you’re over 6ft or your partner is riding behind you every day, the extra room matters. The premium all-rounder.

👨‍👩‍👧 Family (2 Adults + 1 Older Child) — Yamaha XMax 250cc

Bigger frame, more stable at speed, room for three if the child is old enough to ride safely between parents. Safety note: Indonesia doesn’t have a formal minimum age for kids on scooters, but for infants, toddlers, or anyone who can’t hold on reliably, book a private driver (IDR 600–900k / $35–55 per day). No scooter is worth that risk.

📸 Aesthetic / Content-Focused Short Rides — Vespa Sprint

For when the bike is part of the look. Great for Seminyak/Canggu cafes. Not the most practical for hills, long rides, or quick filtering through traffic — but a Vespa shot does hit different.

🏞️ Experienced Riders Wanting Adventure — Honda CRF 250cc

Proper dirt bike. Only if you’re actually going off-road in Munduk, Sidemen, or the hills behind the Bukit. Overkill for beach clubs and cafes.

Pro Tips From Someone Who’s Lived Here

🚨 Helmet Cameras on Sunset Road

Between Canggu and Uluwatu, along Sunset Road, there are now automated helmet-detection cameras that flash when they catch riders without helmets. If you see a flash in your mirror, you’ve likely been photographed. Fines come later via the bike’s registration. Just wear the damn helmet — for every minute of every ride.

👮 Known Police Checkpoint Zones

Beyond Sunset Road, these are the high-probability tourist checkpoint zones:

  • Jimbaran — on the Bypass and around the seafood market (peak evening)
  • Seminyak / Kerobokan — Jl. Kayu Aya, around Petitenget
  • Canggu — Berawa and along Jl. Batu Bolong
  • Uluwatu temple approach — peak tourist hours
  • Sunset Road intersections — anywhere along the bypass

Have your IDP, licence, and STNK on you whenever you ride. Random stops happen.

⛽ Pertamax vs Pertalite — Use the Right One

Use Pertamax (green pump, 92-octane). Do NOT use Pertalite (yellow pump, 90-octane) — cheaper, but some modern scooter engines (including most rental Varios and Nmax) don’t run well on it over time. Bikago bikes take Pertamax.

🗣️ Useful Indonesian Phrases for Scooter Travel

  • “Berapa harga?” — How much?
  • “Pertamax, penuh” — Pertamax, full tank
  • “Terima kasih” — Thank you
  • “Permisi” — Excuse me (useful when filtering through traffic)
  • “Tolong” — Help / please
  • “Maaf” — Sorry

✅ First Ride Checklist

Before you leave the rental point:

  1. Helmet fits snug — if it wobbles, swap it
  2. Key works in all locks (ignition, seat, steering)
  3. Brake lever engagement point is where you expect
  4. You know where the kill switch is
  5. 30-second video walkaround done, WhatsApp’d to yourself
  6. Contract and bike registration (STNK) in your possession
  7. Rental company’s WhatsApp saved in your phone
  8. First stop planned somewhere quiet to get used to the bike

🎒 Luggage on a Scooter — What’s Reasonable

A day backpack, a surfboard (with a board rack), or shopping bags hung from the hook between your legs — all fine. A suitcase, a second person, or anything sticking out wider than the handlebars — no. For airport runs, moving between villas with luggage, or weekly grocery runs, use Grab car or a private driver.

Safety Rules

Wear the Helmet. Every Time.

Even for a two-minute ride. Most serious scooter injuries in Bali happen at low speeds, close to home.

Avoid Sunset Road (The Bypass) If You Can

Sunset Road — the bypass from the airport to Canggu — is where most serious tourist scooter accidents happen. Fast, unpredictable, full of trucks. Take the coast road, or Grab car it.

Daytime Running Lights On

Indonesian law requires headlights on 24/7 when riding. Most bikes auto-on. Check yours does.

Avoid Riding at Night. If You Must…

Night riding in Bali is significantly harder — potholes invisible, dogs, trucks without rear lights, sudden rain. If you must ride after dark: slow down 30%, stick to main lit roads, never ride tired, and check your tail light works before you leave. Hiring a Grab car for the journey home and picking the bike up the next morning is almost always cheaper than an accident.

Travel Insurance Checklist

  • SafetyWing — scooter coverage with IDP
  • World Nomads Explorer Plan — motorbike add-on up to 250cc
  • Heymondo — motorbike add-on at checkout
  • True Traveller (UK) — motorbike coverage standard on Ultimate plan

All require a valid IDP with motorcycle entitlement for claims to pay out.

Dress for the Crash

Flip-flops and shorts are fine for quiet lanes. For longer rides or faster roads, covered shoes and long trousers save skin.

Season Matters

Dry Season (May–October) — Prime

Minimal rain, clear roads. Scooter weather. Recommended for all levels.

Shoulder (April, November) — Generally Good

Afternoon showers. Watch the sky; if storms are building, get home or Grab.

Wet Season (December–March) — Be Careful

Heavy afternoon rain almost daily. Roads slick in Ubud (mossy) and on the Bukit (steep, cliffside). Invisible potholes in standing water. Flash flooding in Canggu. Experienced riders only in January–February.

Fuel, Parking, Gas Stations

Pertamax at IDR 13,500/litre (USD 0.80). Full tank: IDR 55,000–70,000 (USD 3–4). Use Pertamina Pasti Pas stations (big green signs), not roadside bottles. Pay cash or QRIS. Say “Pertamax, penuh.”

Scooter parking is everywhere. Free at most cafes/restaurants, but tip the attendant IDR 2,000–5,000 ($0.12–0.30) on exit. Paid parking at Uluwatu Temple, Kuta Beach, Tanah Lot: IDR 5,000–15,000.

Where Scooters Make Sense

Canggu / Pererenan / Berawa — Essential

From Vela Villas in Pererenan, a scooter gets you to Echo Beach, Berawa, or central Canggu in 5–10 minutes. Faster than a car in peak traffic.

Uluwatu / Bingin / Padang Padang — Ideal

From Marevita Villas, a scooter unlocks surf breaks, beach clubs, hidden warungs, and sunset spots you can’t reach by car. See our Uluwatu vs Canggu guide for area comparison.

Ubud — Useful, But Ride Carefully

Ubud is inland, cooler, surrounded by rice terraces and jungle. Roads are narrower, often damp from the surrounding humidity, and can be mossy — especially around the Tegallalang rice terraces and the Monkey Forest. Different riding than the coast.

For a day trip from the Bukit (1.5 hours) or Canggu (1 hour), a scooter makes sense if you’re comfortable on varied terrain. For stays in Ubud itself, definitely worth having one — the best cafes, yoga studios, and waterfalls are spread out.

Key Ubud scooter destinations: Tegallalang Rice Terraces (35 min from Ubud centre), Campuhan Ridge Walk (parking at the entrance), Tegenungan Waterfall (25 min), the Monkey Forest Sanctuary.

🐒 Monkey Warning: Serious. The macaques at the Monkey Forest and Uluwatu Temple will snatch sunglasses, hats, phones, water bottles — anything loose. They’ve learned tourists will pay to get things back. Keep everything zipped up.

Best bike for Ubud day trips: Yamaha Nmax or Honda PCX. You’ll be on the bike 3+ hours round trip, and comfort matters more than you think.

Seminyak / Kuta — Optional

Busy, chaotic, full of inexperienced tourists. Confident riders only; otherwise Grab.

Airport Runs — No

Luggage plus scooter = bad combination. Private transfer or Grab.

Group Trips or With Young Kids — No

Private driver (IDR 600–900k / $35–55 full day). Safer, and you can actually enjoy the view.
