The short answer
Ubud to Uluwatu is about 53 to 60 km and takes 2 to 2.5 hours by car on a normal day, closer to 1 hour 45 minutes if you leave early and 3 hours or more in the afternoon peak. Canggu to Uluwatu is 30 to 35 km and 1.5 to 2 hours. For any cross-island move with luggage, book a private transfer. Use Grab or Gojek for short hops inside an area, and keep the scooter for local rides, not the Ubud run.

Why does a 30 km drive in Bali take 90 minutes?
Bali distances look small on a map. The problem is the roads. Almost every trip between the south coast and Ubud funnels through Denpasar, and the Bukit peninsula, where Uluwatu sits, connects to the rest of the island through a narrow neck around Jimbaran and the airport. Roads are mostly two lanes, scooters fill every gap, and one ceremony procession or broken down truck can stop a whole corridor.
So think in hours, not kilometres. Timing matters as much as distance: the same Canggu to Uluwatu drive that takes about 1 hour 15 minutes before 8am can take 2.5 to 3 hours if you leave at 4pm. Rain makes it worse. If you are splitting your trip between areas, our Ubud vs Uluwatu and Uluwatu vs Canggu guides help you decide where to base yourself first.
How far is Ubud from Uluwatu, and how long does it take?
Ubud to Uluwatu is roughly 53 to 60 km depending on where you stay at each end, and it is one of the least predictable drives on the island because you cross central Bali, Denpasar and the southern bottleneck. Recent 2026 estimates by departure time:
- Early morning (7am to 9am): about 1 hr 45 min
- Midday (11am to 2pm): about 2 hrs 15 min
- Afternoon peak (3pm to 5pm): 3 hrs or more
- Night (after 9pm): 1.5 to 2 hrs, with lighter traffic but darker, slower roads
On cost, a Grab or Gojek car runs about IDR 480,000 to 650,000 one way and more at surge, while a private hotel to hotel transfer is about IDR 650,000 to 850,000. The transfer is worth the extra: a fixed price, a driver who knows the back roads, and no hunting for a ride on the Bukit at the other end. There is no direct public bus, and shuttle combinations take 4 to 5 hours. Our take: do this drive once, as a planned travel day, and never as a day trip.
How long is Canggu to Uluwatu (and back)?
Canggu to Uluwatu is 30 to 35 km. Budget 1.5 to 2 hours on a normal day, about 1 hour 15 minutes before 8am, 55 minutes late at night, and 2.5 to 3 hours or more in the 3pm to 6pm crawl. The slow points are the Canggu shortcut, Kerobokan, Sunset Road and Jimbaran, so check live traffic before you leave.
A GoCar or GrabCar costs about IDR 220,000 to 320,000, rising past IDR 400,000 at surge. A GrabCar XL for a group or a lot of luggage is about IDR 310,000 to 380,000, and a bike ride (GoRide or GrabBike) about IDR 95,000 to 125,000. A private transfer is IDR 400,000 to 550,000. Uluwatu to Canggu is the same drive in reverse, with one catch: getting picked up by an app on the Bukit is harder than getting dropped off. Some spots, including Single Fin at Suluban, Padang Padang and the temple car park, restrict app pickups, so you may need to walk out to the main road.
The Bali Mandara toll road is not usually worth it for this route. It costs around IDR 14,000 and only tends to save time if there is an accident on the main roads.
Private driver, Grab or Gojek car, or scooter?
Private driver or transfer. A one-way transfer is priced by route. A full day is about IDR 700,000 to 900,000 for 10 to 12 hours with fuel and parking included. It wins for luggage, families, groups, airport runs and any move between areas. See our Bali private driver cost guide for day rates, overtime and tipping.
Grab or Gojek car. Metered, usually cheapest for one or two people on short and mid-length trips, and easy to book. The weak spots are surge pricing at peak hours and in rain, and pickup restrictions in central Ubud and on the Bukit, where local transport groups control some zones. Install both apps and compare the fare each time; our Grab vs Gojek guide covers which one to use where.
Scooter. A daily rental is roughly IDR 100,000 to 200,000 depending on the bike, plus fuel. It is the fastest way around inside Canggu or Uluwatu, but riding 55 km from Ubud to the Bukit in traffic is tiring and only for experienced riders, and never with a suitcase. Read our scooter rental guide for licences, insurance and police checkpoints first.

| Airport to Seminyak | About 10 km | 30 to 90 min | Transfer 150k to 300k |
| Airport to Canggu | About 20 km | 45 min to 1.5 hrs (up to 2.5 hrs peak) | App from about 250k | transfer 250k to 500k |
| Airport to Uluwatu | 21 to 23 km | 45 min to 1.5 hrs | Transfer 300k to 400k |
| Airport to Ubud | About 38 km | 1.5 to 2.5 hrs | Transfer 350k to 650k |
Fares move with demand, rain and time of day, and app fares surge at peak. Treat these as indicative and check the live price in the app or with your driver before you go.
Getting to and from the airport (DPS)
Ngurah Rai airport sits on the neck of the Bukit, so Seminyak and Uluwatu are the shorter rides and Ubud is the long one. App rides do not pick up at the arrivals kerb: Grab sends international arrivals to its GrabCar lounge and Gojek uses a marked pickup point, while the kerbside taxis are the airport cooperative's fixed fare cars. After a long flight, a pre-booked transfer with a name sign is the easy option, especially to Ubud or the Bukit.
Going back, add at least 45 minutes to any estimate between 3pm and 7pm, and aim to arrive about 3 hours before an international flight. If you are staying in Ubud with an early flight, leave the night before or set off before dawn.
Which option should you pick?
Changing areas (Ubud to Uluwatu, Ubud to Canggu, Canggu to Uluwatu): book a private transfer. The gap over an app car is small next to the stress it saves, and you are not stuck hunting for a pickup on the Bukit with luggage.
Airport runs: pre-booked transfer for arrivals, app car is fine for a light departure from Seminyak or Canggu outside peak hours.
Short hops inside an area: Grab or Gojek, car or bike. Cheapest and quickest for dinners and beach runs.
Day trips: a full-day driver. A day out to Ubud from the coast means 4 to 5 hours in the car, so start early or skip it and spend a few nights there instead.
Skip: trying to do Ubud and Uluwatu in one day, and riding a scooter across the island with bags.
Cabo tip: Arriving at a villa down the Bingin lanes or near Padang Padang? Give your driver the villa's map pin, not just the area name, and book your next ride before you need it. App pickups are restricted at several Bukit hot spots, so a return trip you lined up in the afternoon beats waiting on a cliff road after sunset.
