The short answer
There is no single "best" interior designer in Bali — there is a best studio for your villa, your budget and the guest you want to book. For a full architecture-and-interiors package under one roof, Studio Jencquel, Word of Mouth and Earth Lines. For interiors-led work with a strong point of view, Kamu Concepts and Romina Baldomir. Why interiors are the lever most owners underspend
On a Bali villa, the interior is where the rate is won or lost. The architecture sets the bones, but the guest books the photo — and the photo is lighting, materials, styling and one memorable moment, all of which live in the interior. The reason interiors matter even more than owners expect: they're the one lever you can still pull late. Once the shell is built — or if you've bought an off-plan "copy" villa — the entire opportunity moves to the interior and the finish, and the best improvements can be made close to handover without touching the structure. How to choose an interior designer in Bali
Before the names, the filter. These are the things we look for in a studio when a villa's numbers depend on the fit-out.
- Do they design for a guest, or for a magazine? A rental villa is styled to photograph well on a phone and to survive real guests. A gorgeous room that shoots badly, or shows wear in six months, costs you rate.
- Can they deliver the fit-out, not just the concept? In Bali the gap between a beautiful moodboard and a finished room is procurement, custom furniture makers and site supervision. Ask who manages that, and how.
- Local sourcing and the markup. Bali's craft — teak, rattan, stone, textiles, custom pieces — is a real advantage. Ask how they source, whether they hold a markup on furniture and FF&E, and how that markup is disclosed.
- One signature moment. The villas that win the click have a single memorable gesture — a feature wall, a sculptural light, a material used with conviction. Studios that try to make every room shout end up with none that do.
- Durable, tropical-smart material choices. Humidity, salt air and heavy guest turnover punish the wrong finishes. The best studios choose materials that still look new at year three.
- Will they work with your operator? A villa styled for how guests actually use it — storage, wear, turnover, the lead photo — performs better than one styled only to look good empty.
The studios worth knowing
Studio Jencquel — architecture and interiors, craft-led
Known for: architecture and interior design under one roof, led by Maximilian Jencquel, with a restrained, material-honest sensibility rooted in Balinese and Javanese craft.
Signature work: Rumah Purnama, a 100-year-old Balinese wantilan restored into a retreat in Ubud, and the Hartland Estate.
Choose them if you want the building and the interiors designed as one calm, timeless idea, and you value craft and provenance over spectacle.
Less ideal if you only need styling on a finished villa — this is full design work, priced as such.
Word of Mouth — interiors, furniture and lighting
Known for: a full creative practice spanning interiors, furniture and lighting as well as architecture, with a run of awards behind it — an Asia Pacific Property Award, an Indonesian Tourism Award and a Yak Award among them.
Signature work: the Lovelli Residence, Seascape Lembongan and the KISS Hotel.
Choose them if you want one studio to carry the villa from concept to the last light fitting, with their own furniture and lighting in the mix.
Less ideal if you want a purely local-craft aesthetic — their range is broader and more design-forward.
Earth Lines — tropical, context-led architecture and interiors
Known for: a Bali studio doing architecture and interiors together with a tropical, context-led approach across villas, eco-resorts and spas.
Signature work: the Iron Wood House, The Asa Maia in Uluwatu and Uma Jiwa in Ubud.
Choose them if you want interiors designed in step with a site-responsive building, with a genuine hospitality track record behind them.
Less ideal if you want a single headline-name signature style rather than a context-led practice.
Kamu Concepts — interiors with a clear point of view
Known for: a Bali interior design studio working across residential and hospitality, with a warm, considered, liveable aesthetic. A studio we've worked with at Cabo, so we've seen how they translate a brief into a room that photographs and holds up.
Choose them if you want interiors-led work with a strong point of view and a studio that thinks about how a space is actually used.
Less ideal if you need full architecture as well — this is an interiors practice.
Romina Baldomir — atmospheric, grounded interiors
Known for: a Bali interior design studio working across residential and hospitality, with a philosophy of spaces that are "atmospheric, grounded and meant to last" — restrained, material-led rooms rather than trend-driven ones.
Choose them if you want a calm, timeless interior with a considered, creative-direction approach and finishes chosen to age well.
Less ideal if you want a bold, high-contrast statement look — the sensibility here is quiet and grounded.
Paz Studio — polished hospitality interiors
Known for: a Bali interior and architecture studio with a strong hospitality portfolio, best known for the fine-dining restaurant Santanera in Canggu.
Choose them if you want a refined, hospitality-grade interior — the kind of finish that reads as a boutique-hotel experience rather than a private home.
Less ideal if you want a pared-back, budget-conscious fit-out — this is polished, design-led work.
What we see as the operator
We manage villas across Uluwatu, Bingin, Canggu, Pererenan and Nyang Nyang, and the interior is where we see rate made or lost. Three things hold true whoever the designer was.
First, the lead photo does most of the work — and the lead photo is an interior decision: light, a hero moment, and styling shot properly. Second, durable, tropical-smart materials protect the owner's net yield, because cheap finishes show wear fast and turn into complaints and refreshes. And third, a villa styled for how guests actually live — storage, wear points, the walk-through a guest photographs — outperforms one styled only to look good empty. When you don't need a full studio
Honest answer: often. If your villa is small, already built, or on a tight budget, a full interior studio can be the wrong spend. A focused styling budget — considered lighting, a stronger material and colour palette, locally-woven textiles, one signature piece, and proper styling for the listing photos — delivers most of the rate uplift for a fraction of the cost, and it can be done late. Put the money where the guest actually looks: the photo, the arrival moment, the one room everyone shoots.
