The Best Architects in Bali (2026): An Operator's Honest Guide

By Keanu Fischell, Co-Founder, Cabo Bali · Updated September 2026 · 9 min read · An operator's honest read on who designs Bali's best-performing villas — and how to pick the right architect for what you're building.

The short answer

There is no single "best" architect in Bali — there is a best architect for your site, your budget and the guest you're building for. For sculptural, internationally-published modern villas, Alexis Dornier and Patisandhika lead. For architecture and interiors under one roof with real craft, Studio Jencquel and Word of Mouth. For bamboo and natural materials, Pablo Luna Studio is in a class of its own. We manage villas designed by several of these studios, so this list is written from what actually performs on the calendar, not what photographs well in a magazine.

Why the architect decides your ceiling

Most owners treat the architect as a cost line and the manager as the growth lever. It's backwards. A manager can move price, distribution and guest experience — and a good one will — but a manager cannot add the morning light a bedroom never got, move a pool out of the shade, or manufacture the "only-here" moment that wins the hero photo. Those are decided on paper, at concept stage, and they set the ceiling everything else works under. We've written the full case for this in Design That Rents; the short version is that the architect is the single most under-priced lever in Bali villa investment.

So the question isn't "who is the best architect in Bali." It's "who is the right architect for the villa I'm actually building, in the location I've actually got, for the guest I actually want." The firms below each answer that differently.

How to choose an architect in Bali

Before the names, the filter. In eight years of running villas across the Bukit and Canggu, these are the six things that separate an architect who lifts your rate from one who just delivers a pretty render.

  • Do they build for the tropics, not just in it? Cross-ventilation, shade, drainage and damp control are the difference between a villa that ages well and one that grows mould and bad reviews. Ask to see a project three years on, not just on handover day.
  • Have they built for rental, or only for owners who live there? A private home and a rental villa are different briefs. Staff flow, storage, turnover logistics and lockable owner space all decide running cost and bookable nights.
  • One signature moment, executed properly. The villas that win the click have a single memorable gesture — a volume, a stair, a screen, a view framed just so. A studio that gives you five competing ideas usually gives you none.
  • Do they hold the budget? Bali build budgets slip. Ask directly how they manage cost through construction and who carries the risk when a supplier price moves.
  • Interiors in-house or coordinated? A villa where architecture and interiors are designed together reads as one idea. Split them across two studios and you need someone holding the line between them.
  • Will they talk to your operator early? The best-performing villas we manage were ones where design and management sat at the same table before the design was locked. An architect who welcomes that is building you an asset, not a monument.

The architects worth knowing

Alexis Dornier — sculptural modern, internationally published

Known for: high-end residential, hospitality and cultural work across Bali, Lombok and beyond, with a distinctive language of floating volumes, curves and spaces that reveal themselves as you move through them. Widely featured in Wallpaper, Dezeen and ArchDaily.

Signature work: the Birdhouses resort, Villa Omah Prana in Payangan, The Barn and Bond Bali.

Choose them if you want an architecturally serious, publication-worthy villa that will stand out in a saturated market and carry a premium rate on distinctiveness alone.

Less ideal if your budget is tight or your brief is a straightforward two-bedroom rental — this is design-forward work and it's priced accordingly.

Studio Jencquel — architecture and interiors, craft-led

Known for: architecture and interior design under one roof, led by Maximilian Jencquel, with a restrained, material-honest, almost Zen sensibility rooted in Balinese and Javanese craft.

Signature work: Rumah Purnama, a 100-year-old Balinese wantilan restored into a retreat in Ubud, and the Hartland Estate.

Choose them if you want a calm, timeless villa where the building and the interiors are one coherent idea, and you value craft and provenance over spectacle.

Less ideal if you're after a bold, look-at-me statement villa — their power is quiet, and that's the point.

Pablo Luna Studio — natural and bamboo architecture

Known for: "natural architecture" in bamboo and rammed earth — sculptural, wave-like structures for villas, retreats and boutique hotels that are genuinely unlike anything else on the island.

Signature work: the Belalu Dome Villa, the Shell Restaurant at Intaaya on Nusa Penida, and Studio Lodtunduh.

Choose them if you're building a retreat, an eco-villa or a wellness-led property where the architecture is the experience — bamboo is a marketing asset as much as a material.

Less ideal if you want a conventional concrete-and-glass villa, or you're not prepared for the specialist maintenance a bamboo structure needs in the tropics.

Word of Mouth — architecture, interiors and furniture

Known for: a full creative practice spanning architecture, interiors, furniture and lighting, with a run of awards behind it — an Asia Pacific Property Award, an Indonesian Tourism Award and a Yak Award among them.

Signature work: the Lovelli Residence, Seascape Lembongan, the Lalaland Residence and the KISS Hotel.

Choose them if you want one studio to carry the whole villa from structure to the last light fitting, with a track record across both homes and hospitality.

Less ideal if you already have an interior designer you love and only need architecture — their strength is the full package.

Patisandhika — modern and brutalist tropical

Known for: clean, modern tropical architecture with a confident use of concrete, brought to a wide audience by the Brutalist Tropical Home designed with Daniel Mitchell and published across Dezeen, Yellowtrace and Ignant.

Signature work: the Brutalist Tropical Home in Bali.

Choose them if you want a striking, contemporary villa with a strong material identity that photographs exceptionally and reads as design-literate to the guest you're chasing.

Less ideal if your buyer or guest leans traditional Balinese — this is a modern, urban-influenced language.

Studio Lumbung Architect — established local practice

Known for: a Bali-based architecture firm with an internationally recognised body of work and the local delivery experience that matters when a build has to actually get finished on the island.

Choose them if you want an established local team that can carry a project from design through the realities of Bali construction and permitting.

Less ideal if you specifically want a single-signature, internationally-branded name attached to the property for marketing.

Earth Lines Architects — tropical, context-led architecture and interiors

Known for: a Bali-based architecture and interior design firm working on international residential and commercial projects with a tropical, context-led approach — villas, eco-resorts and spas as much as homes.

Signature work: the Iron Wood House, The Asa Maia in Uluwatu, and Uma Jiwa in Ubud.

Choose them if you want one studio for both architecture and interiors with a site-responsive tropical sensibility and a genuine hospitality track record, not just private homes.

Less ideal if you specifically want a single headline-name signature style rather than a context-led practice.

What we see as the operator

We manage villas across Uluwatu, Bingin, Canggu, Pererenan and Nyang Nyang, and we live with the consequences of design decisions every booking cycle. Three patterns hold true across the portfolio, whoever the architect was.

First, the villas that beat their local market on rate almost always have one clear architectural idea and one clear guest in mind — not a bit of everything. Second, the running cost of a villa is designed in long before we take it over: airflow, drainage, staff flow and durable finishes decide how much of the gross an owner actually keeps. And third, the single highest-return conversation an owner can have is a joint one — architect and operator, at concept stage, before the drawings are locked. That's when the cheap-on-paper, expensive-to-retrofit decisions get made. We do this as a free positioning and forecast review for owners building or buying; it's the same logic behind our Villa Positioning Framework.

When you don't need a name architect

Honest answer: often. If you're buying an off-plan "copy" villa where the shell is already fixed, hiring a headline architect is the wrong spend — the leverage has moved to interiors, finish and styling, which is a fraction of the cost and can be done late. We cover exactly that case in Villa Design Decisions That Kill Rental Performance. A name architect earns its fee when you control the site and the structure from the start. When you don't, put the money where the guest actually looks.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best architect in Bali?

There isn't one. For sculptural modern residences, Alexis Dornier and Patisandhika lead; for architecture-plus-interiors with craft, Studio Jencquel, Word of Mouth and Earth Lines Architects; for bamboo and natural materials, Pablo Luna Studio. The right choice depends on your site, budget and the guest you're designing for.

How much does an architect cost for a Bali villa?

Fees vary widely by studio and scope, typically quoted as a percentage of build cost or a fixed design fee. Design-forward, internationally-published studios sit at the top of the range; established local firms are more accessible. Always confirm what's included — concept only, or full documentation and construction supervision.

Do I need an architect or an interior designer?

If you're building from the ground up and control the structure, start with an architect. If you're buying a finished or off-plan villa where the shell is fixed, an interior designer delivers more return for less money. Some studios, like Studio Jencquel, Word of Mouth and Earth Lines, do both.

Should my villa manager be involved in the design?

Yes, and early. Involving an operator at concept stage — before the design is locked — is the cheapest way to catch the decisions that quietly cost bookings later: airflow, positioning for a target guest, and the lead photo. It costs nothing to ask and it raises the ceiling the villa performs under.
