3 Days in Uluwatu: A Day-by-Day Itinerary (2026)

3 Days in Uluwatu: A Day-by-Day Itinerary (2026)

Updated 12 October 2026 | 11 min read | By Rissa Prima, Digital Marketing Manager, Cabo Bali

The short answer

Three days is the right amount of time for a first trip to Uluwatu. Two days covers the highlights, but the Bukit is spread out and runs on the tide, so a third day lets you see both coasts without rushing. Our plan: Day 1 on the cliffs, with Padang Padang and the Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple. Day 2 in the water at Bingin, ending with sunset at Saltwood. Day 3 on the calm east side at Melasti or Sundays. Surfers should stay four to five days.

Only have a weekend? Our 2-day Uluwatu itinerary is the short version of this plan, built for couples.

Quick answer

  • How many days in Uluwatu: 3 for a first visit, 2 if you only want the highlights, 4 to 5 if you surf or want slow beach days
  • Day 1 | Cliffs and culture: Analog coffee, Padang Padang, a massage on Jalan Labuansait, the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple, dinner at Kala
  • Day 2 | Surf and Bingin: a surf lesson, lunch at Ours, padel or the pool, sunset at Saltwood, dinner at Gooseberry
  • Day 3 | The east side: Melasti early or a full day at Sundays Beach Club, sunset at Mana or Single Fin, a casual last dinner at Ulu Fish Market
  • Getting around: a scooter if you are confident, otherwise a private driver at around IDR 500k a day
  • Where to stay: Bingin or central Uluwatu, so every stop below is a short ride away

How many days do you need in Uluwatu?

We get this question from guests every week, and our answer is three days for most first-time visitors. Uluwatu is really the whole Bukit Peninsula: the surf beaches and cliff bars on the west coast, the calm, swimmable beaches around Ungasan in the east, and a lot of winding road in between. Squeeze it into two days and you end up choosing between them. Give it three and each day can have its own coast, its own sunset and its own dinner.

Trip lengthWho it suitsWhat you will fit in
2 daysCouples on a weekend, or a stop on a longer Bali tripOne beach a day, a massage, two sunsets, two good dinners
3 daysMost first-time visitorsBoth coasts, the temple and Kecak dance, a surf lesson, three different sunsets
4 to 5 daysSurfers, wellness trips, familiesSeveral surf sessions around the tide, a hike-down beach like Green Bowl, real pool days
A week or moreSlow travellers and remote workersA routine: the same coffee spot, a padel club, a favourite warung

The itinerary below assumes you are based around Bingin or central Uluwatu. Not sure which one suits you? Our Uluwatu vs Bingin guide breaks it down.

Day 1 | Cliffs, Padang Padang and the Kecak dance

Morning | Analog, then Padang Padang early

Start at Analog, a low-lit, phone-down coffee bar that we rate so highly we stock its coffee in every villa we manage. More options are in our Uluwatu coffee guide.

Then head to Padang Padang while it is still quiet. It is a small, sheltered cove reached by a narrow staircase through a gap in the cliff, with calmer water than most of the Bukit and a small entry fee. By late morning it is packed, so go early and leave when the crowd arrives.

Afternoon | Lunch on Labuansait and a massage

Jalan Labuansait is the road that holds most of Uluwatu's food. For lunch, Warung Local plates buffet-style nasi campur from about IDR 35k, and if the queue is out the door, Satu a little further along is just as good.

Then get out of the midday heat. U Massage on the same road does a 60-minute Balinese massage from around IDR 230k, and it is the no-fuss hour we send most guests to. Want an ocean view instead? Our massage and spa guide covers the clifftop options.

Sunset | Uluwatu Temple and the Kecak fire dance

Pura Luhur Uluwatu sits on a cliff above the ocean at the south-west tip of the Bukit, and the Kecak fire dance is performed there at sunset in an open-air amphitheatre. It lasts about an hour. Temple entry and the Kecak ticket are paid separately, so check current prices before you go. Aim to arrive by 5pm, as the ticket counter opens around then and the good seats go first.

Two practical things. Cover your shoulders and knees (a sarong is handed out at the entrance), and keep sunglasses and phones out of reach, because the temple monkeys are quick. It is busy, and we still think the Kecak is worth seeing once.

Evening | Dinner at Kala

Kala is a modern Greek grill on Jalan Labuansait built around a wood fire, and it is the table we book when friends are in town. Mains start from IDR 160k. It is one of the hardest tables on the Bukit to get, so book it the day you land. Fully booked? Papi Sapi on the same road is the best grill in Uluwatu. The full list is in our Uluwatu restaurants guide.

Day 2 | Surf, Bingin and the best sunset on the Bukit

Morning | A surf lesson, timed to the tide

You are in the surf capital of Bali, so get in the water. Beginners learn at Dreamland, Padang Padang or Thomas, where the waves are gentler. Bingin, Impossibles and the main Uluwatu break are fast, shallow reef breaks for experienced surfers only.

For a lesson, Kala Surf in Pecatu runs day sessions you can book without staying at the camp, with coaches who film you and go through the footage afterwards. It is our pick on the Bukit, and our guide to learning to surf in Uluwatu explains why. Not a surfer? Swap this for a slow morning swim at Dreamland, the most swim-friendly bay near Bingin.

Afternoon | Ours for lunch, then padel or the pool

Ours on Jalan Labuansait is open from 8am to 11pm and does calm, reliable Mediterranean food, so it works whether your surf ran long or short.

Spend the hottest hours at the villa pool, or play. The Ground in Bingin is the most beautiful padel club on the Bukit, with pink and blue courts, and if you are staying in a Cabo villa you get 10% off, with the code that comes with your booking confirmation. Every club is ranked in our Uluwatu padel guide.

Sunset | Saltwood above Bingin

Saltwood opened in June 2026 on the cliff at Bingin, looking over the surf towards Dreamland, with bean bags, wooden seating and no minimum spend. It is our favourite sunset spot in Uluwatu right now. It is not cheap and it fills up at weekends, so arrive mid-afternoon for a seat with a clear ocean line.

Evening | Gooseberry in Bingin

Stay in Bingin for dinner. Gooseberry is a modern French restaurant above the beach, with a wood grill and a serious wine list, and it is the special-occasion table of this trip. Mains run IDR 265k to 595k, plus 10% tax and 7% service. Book ahead, and take a driver if you are not confident on a scooter, as the access lane is narrow.

Day 3 | The east side, Melasti or a beach club day

Morning | Melasti before 10am

Day 3 crosses to the Ungasan side, where the beaches swap reef and surf for calm water and easy access. Melasti is reached by a road cut down through the limestone cliffs, so you drive most of the way to the sand. It is wide, white and good for swimming. Get there before 10am, while it still feels special.

Fit and up early? Green Bowl is the alternative: a small, beautiful beach with caves at the bottom of several hundred steps. Go in the morning before the heat, and pace the climb back up. All 14 beaches are compared in our best beaches in Uluwatu guide.

Afternoon | A full day at Sundays, or a long lunch

If you want one proper beach club day on this trip, make it Sundays Beach Club in Ungasan. You ride an inclinator down the cliff to a private-feeling beach, and the day pass includes food and drink credit, kayaks, paddle boards and snorkels. Honeycombers listed it at IDR 800,000 per adult in April 2026, so check the current price when you book. Is it worth it? Yes, if you will stay all afternoon. Not for a quick hour.

Not a beach club person? Head back west for a slow lunch and a last swim in the villa pool instead. Our Uluwatu beach clubs guide explains which clubs carry a minimum spend and which do not.

Sunset | Pick by the day of the week

  • At Sundays: stay for the beach bonfire, which starts around sunset
  • On a Friday: Mana's sunset session runs 4pm to 7pm, and half the town turns up
  • On a Sunday: Single Fin on the Uluwatu cliffs is the Sunday night out, with a younger crowd
  • Any other night: Mana or Ulu Cliffhouse, both with no minimum spend

Evening | A casual last dinner at Ulu Fish Market

End the trip somewhere relaxed. Ulu Fish Market does fresh seafood with a Japanese-Peruvian accent, mains from IDR 130k, and it is casual enough to turn up barefoot. It is also where the crowd heads after Mana on a Friday. Want a bigger last night? Yuki is our date-night pick, a Japanese izakaya on Jalan Labuansait, and you will need to book.

Cabo tip: plan each day around the tide, not the clock. Check a surf app like Surfline the night before. Padang Padang, Bingin and several other beaches change completely between low and high tide, and some all but disappear at high water. If the morning tide suits Bingin better than Padang Padang, simply swap Day 1 and Day 2. And book Kala, Gooseberry and any sunset table on the day you arrive, especially in July, August and over Christmas.

What we would skip

  • Padang Padang at midday. Lovely at 8am, crowded by noon. Go early or not at all.
  • Trying to see all 14 beaches. Two west-coast beaches and one on the east side is a full three days.
  • Beach clubs with a minimum spend for a short visit. If you only have two hours, go to a no-minimum spot like Mana or Saltwood.
  • Driving the Bukit after dark without scooter confidence. The roads are steep and winding. Book a driver for the nights you go out.

Key takeaways

  • Three days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Uluwatu. Two covers the highlights, and four to five suits surfers.
  • Give each day its own coast: the cliffs and temple on Day 1, Bingin and the surf on Day 2, the calm east side on Day 3.
  • See the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple once. Arrive by 5pm, cover up, and guard your sunglasses from the monkeys.
  • Our favourite sunset is Saltwood above Bingin. Time the others to Mana's Friday session or Single Fin on a Sunday.
  • Plan around the tide and book the big dinners (Kala, Gooseberry, Yuki) the day you land.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Uluwatu?

Three days is right for most first-time visitors. It gives you one day on the cliffs and at Uluwatu Temple, one day surfing and swimming around Bingin, and one day on the calm Ungasan beaches. Two days covers the highlights if you are short on time, and surfers or slow travellers should plan four to five.

Is 3 days in Uluwatu enough?

Yes, for a first trip. Three days is enough to see both coasts, watch the Kecak dance, take a surf lesson and catch three different sunsets without rushing. It is not enough to surf the Bukit properly or to settle into a routine, so stay longer if either matters to you.

Can you visit Uluwatu Temple and see the Kecak dance on the same evening?

Yes. The Kecak fire dance is performed at sunset in the temple's open-air amphitheatre, so you can walk the clifftop paths first and then take your seat. Temple entry and the Kecak ticket are paid separately. Arrive by around 5pm and cover your shoulders and knees.

Do you need a scooter for a 3-day Uluwatu itinerary?

Not if you are not confident riding. A scooter is the easiest way to get around the Bukit, but the roads are steep and winding. A private driver costs around IDR 500,000 a day and is the better choice for the evenings you go out.

Where should you stay for 3 days in Uluwatu?

Base yourself in Bingin or central Uluwatu, near Jalan Labuansait. From there, Padang Padang, the temple, Saltwood and most of the restaurants in this itinerary are a short ride away, and the Ungasan beaches are an easy drive on Day 3.

What is the best day of the week for sunset in Uluwatu?

Friday, if you want a crowd: Mana runs its sunset session from 4pm to 7pm. Sunday night belongs to Single Fin. For the best view on any day, our pick is Saltwood above Bingin, which has no minimum spend.

Long story short

Give Uluwatu three days and split them by coast. Day 1 is Padang Padang early, a massage, and the Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple. Day 2 is a surf lesson, the pool, and sunset at Saltwood before dinner at Gooseberry. Day 3 is Melasti or a full Sundays beach club day, then Mana or Single Fin. Skip midday Padang Padang and short visits to minimum-spend clubs. If you only have two days, follow our 2-day plan. If you surf, stay five.
