Can you learn to surf in Uluwatu?
Yes, but not where the photos are taken. The waves that made the Bukit famous break over shallow reef. Uluwatu itself is a left hand reef break for advanced surfers on medium to large swells, Padang Padang Lefts is a barrelling wave that is not for beginners or intermediates under any conditions, and Bingin is a short, hollow left packed with experienced locals. Paddle out there on day one and you will get hurt or get in someone's way.
The beginner waves are a short drive away. Baby Padang, the right hand side of Padang Padang, is one of the best beginner waves in Bali on small to medium swells. Dreamland is the only break in the area with a mainly sandy bottom. Balangan is a long left for intermediates, and only gentle enough for learners on very small swell at high tide. Every good school picks between these three each morning based on tide and swell, which is the main reason to book one.
If you have never stood on a board and want the gentlest start, Canggu's sandy beach breaks are easier. Our Canggu surf schools guide covers that side of the island, and Uluwatu vs Canggu helps you choose where to base yourself.
The best surf schools and camps, one by one
Kala Surf | the best coached camp on the Bukit
A full surf camp on Jalan Labuansait in Pecatu, built around progression: coaching every session, daily video analysis, theory, pool training and a surf skate park, plus a gym and pool on site. Beginners start with a 3 day surf school on soft tops before moving into the coaching levels, and advanced surfers can book guiding only.
It suits anyone whose trip is mainly about getting better at surfing. Published rates run from IDR 978,000 a night for guiding to IDR 1,227,000 a night for the surf school package, with accommodation and breakfast included. The caveat: dinner is not included, and sessions start as early as 5.30am when the tide says so. We have reviewed it in depth in why we send our guests to Kala Surf.
Rapture Padang Padang | the social camp by the beach
About 500 metres from the Padang Padang break, with Uluwatu, Bingin, Impossibles and Dreamland each within a five minute drive. Rapture also runs a second camp on top of Green Bowl. Breakfast is daily, dinner Monday to Friday, with daily yoga, weekly video analysis and an infinity pool. Lessons for levels 1 to 3 run at Baby Padang, Dreamland and Balangan.
It suits solo travellers and friends who want a sociable base and flexible booking, with a one night minimum. Rapture's own early 2026 comparison lists it from around EUR 45 a night, room only, with surf lessons added on top, so check current prices for the full package. The caveat: it is a busier, more social camp than Kala or Cari.
Cari Surf | the calm, progression focused camp
An Uluwatu surf camp with ISA certified coaches, small groups, video analysis and feedback between waves, and a deliberately calm, no party atmosphere. Packs run from Guiding (levels 3 to 5) through Lesson (levels 2 to 3) to an Intensive Progression pack.
Published weekly rates are IDR 6,265,000 per person for the Guiding Pack, IDR 8,155,000 for the Lesson Pack and IDR 14,790,000 for Intensive Progression, accommodation included. It suits surfers who can already ride green waves and want structured improvement. The caveat: there is a three night minimum, and its beginner pack pricing on the site looked inconsistent when we checked, so confirm before you book.
Padang Padang Surf Camp | the best for lessons only
A surf and yoga camp on Jalan Labuan Sait in Pecatu, working Padang Padang, Impossibles, Bingin, Dreamland and Balangan. It runs small group, semi private (two surfers, one coach) and private lessons, plus surf guiding for independent surfers and video coaching for Bali residents.
The big plus for villa guests: you do not need to stay at the camp, as lessons and guiding can be booked on their own. Prices are not published, so check current prices when you message them. The caveat: you will need your own transport to the meeting point from most villas.
Dawn Patrol | the Balangan option
A surf school based at Balangan Beach, open daily from 6am to 7pm, teaching beginner, intermediate and advanced surf guiding. Lessons come as private 1:1, semi private 2:1 and small groups of 3 or 4 to one coach, with discounted 3, 5 and 7 day packages.
It suits families and mixed groups staying on the Jimbaran side of the Bukit, and anyone who wants Balangan's long left as a home break. Prices are not published on the homepage, so check current prices. The caveat: Balangan is only beginner friendly on very small swell, so expect the school to move you around on bigger days.
Cabo tip: Book your lesson for the day after you land, not the morning after a late flight, and let the school pick the time from the tide chart rather than choosing a slot yourself. On the Bukit the same beach can be perfect at 7am and dangerous by 11am. Bring reef booties if you are surfing Balangan at low tide.
Surf camp or lessons from your villa?
If surfing is the whole point of the trip, a camp is the better buy. You surf twice a day with the same coach, get filmed and reviewed, and progress far faster than with a lesson here and there. That is why we send surf focused guests to camps like Kala, even though they also sell beds.
If surfing is one part of a holiday with a partner, family or friends who do not surf, stay in a villa and book lessons. Padang Padang Surf Camp sells lessons only, Rapture coaches day visitors, Kala can arrange day sessions and Dawn Patrol teaches at Balangan. Two or three coached sessions across a week is plenty for most beginners. Our 48 hours in Uluwatu guide shows how a morning surf fits around the rest of a Bukit trip, and our recovery centres guide covers the ice baths and saunas for tired shoulders.
How much does it cost?
Camps publish package rates. Single lesson prices are mostly not published, so ask the school directly.
| School or camp | Area | Best for | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kala Surf | Pecatu | Coached surf weeks, all levels | IDR 978,000 to 1,227,000 a night, incl. room |
| Rapture | Padang Padang, Green Bowl | Social camp, flexible stays | From about EUR 45 a night, room only |
| Cari Surf | Uluwatu | Intermediates progressing | IDR 6,265,000 to 14,790,000 a week, incl. room |
| Padang Padang Surf Camp | Pecatu | Lessons only from a villa | Check current prices |
| Dawn Patrol | Balangan | Families, Balangan lessons | Check current prices |
Prices move and camps run seasonal offers. Treat these as indicative and confirm with the school when you book.

When is the best time to surf in Uluwatu?
April to October. The dry season brings south east trade winds that blow offshore every morning on the Bukit's west facing breaks, which is exactly what Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin and Balangan need. April, May, September and October are the sweet spot, with good waves and thinner lineups than the June to August peak. Rapture rates May and early June as particularly good for learning.
From November to March the wind swings round. Swells are generally smaller, which can suit beginners, and schools move to early sessions or east coast breaks. Padang Padang and Balangan are partly sheltered by their headlands. If your dates are fixed in the wet season, a school that drives you to the right side of the island matters more than which camp you pick.
Key takeaways
- Most Uluwatu reefs are for experienced surfers. Beginners learn at Baby Padang, Dreamland and small days at Balangan.
- For a coached surf week, Kala Surf is our pick. Rapture is the social option, Cari Surf the calm, progression focused one.
- Staying in a villa? Book lessons only with Padang Padang Surf Camp or Dawn Patrol, or a day session at Kala.
- Camp rates are published (Kala from IDR 978,000 a night, Cari from IDR 6,265,000 a week). Lesson prices mostly are not, so ask.
- Surf April to October for offshore mornings, ideally April, May, September or October to dodge peak crowds.
Frequently asked questions
Is Uluwatu good for beginner surfers?
Parts of it. The famous reefs (Uluwatu, Padang Padang Lefts, Bingin, Impossibles) are for experienced surfers. Beginners learn at Baby Padang (the Padang Padang right), Dreamland, the only mainly sandy bottom break in the area, and Balangan on very small days. Book a lesson so a coach picks the spot for the tide.
What is the best surf camp in Uluwatu?
For a coached surf week, our pick is Kala Surf in Pecatu, with daily video analysis and a 3 day beginner course. Rapture at Padang Padang suits mixed groups and budgets, and Cari Surf in Uluwatu is the calmer, progression focused option.
How much does a surf camp in Uluwatu cost?
Published 2026 rates: Kala Surf from IDR 978,000 a night (guiding) to IDR 1,227,000 a night (surf school), and Cari Surf from IDR 990,000 a night (guiding) to IDR 2,240,000 a night (intensive), accommodation included. Single lesson prices are mostly not published, so check current prices with the school.
Can I take surf lessons in Uluwatu without staying at a camp?
Yes. Padang Padang Surf Camp sells lessons only, Rapture offers coaching to day visitors, Kala can arrange day sessions, and Dawn Patrol at Balangan runs private and small group lessons. Confirm the price and meeting point when you book.
When is the best time to surf in Uluwatu?
April to October, the dry season, when morning south east trade winds blow offshore on the Bukit's west facing breaks. April, May, September and October are less crowded than the June to August peak. In the wet season schools move lessons earlier or to east coast breaks.
Should I learn to surf in Uluwatu or Canggu?
Complete first timers have it easier in Canggu, where the beach breaks are sandy and forgiving. If you can already stand up, or you are staying on the Bukit anyway, Uluwatu with a coach is the better place to progress.
Long story short
Do not paddle out at Uluwatu or Padang Padang on your first day. If surfing is the trip, book a week at Kala Surf and you will come home a better surfer. If you want a social base, Rapture. If you can already ride green waves, Cari. If surfing is one part of a villa holiday, book two or three lessons with Padang Padang Surf Camp or Dawn Patrol and let them pick the beach. Come between April and October.
