The Canggu coast | Pererenan sits at its quiet northern end

The short answer

Pererenan Beach is the black sand surf beach at the end of Jl. Pantai Pererenan, the quiet northern edge of Canggu. It is about a 300 metre walk west of Echo Beach, with a punchy right and a shorter left at the rivermouth for intermediate and advanced surfers. It is not a swimming beach: rips, rocks and no lifeguards. Come for sunset, which lands between 6pm and 6:45pm all year, and park a scooter for about IDR 2,000.

Quick answer

  • What it is: black volcanic sand, the Gajah Mina statue on the rocks, beach stalls with coconuts and beer
  • Surf: a right and a left over reef and rock at the rivermouth, intermediate to advanced, best on a mid tide
  • Swimming: no, unless you mean standing in the shallows on a calm day
  • Sunset: about 6:15pm in late October, 6:07pm at the earliest (May and June), 6:45pm at the latest (January)
  • Parking: about IDR 2,000 for a scooter and IDR 5,000 for a car, no entrance fee (at last report)
  • Best for: surfers who can read a reef, sunset walks, couples staying on Jl. Pantai Pererenan
  • Not for: families who want to swim, and anyone on their first week of surfing

What is Pererenan Beach like?

Pererenan Beach is a strip of black volcanic sand at the north-western end of the Canggu coast, where Jl. Pantai Pererenan runs out of cafés and meets the sea. Echo Beach is on one side and Seseh is on the other. The landmark is the Gajah Mina statue, a half elephant, half fish figure on the rock platform, which TheSmartLocal describes as Baruna, the ruler of the sea.

It feels more local than the beaches further east. Surfers sit in the lineup, families from the village come down in the late afternoon, and a handful of stalls sell young coconuts and cold beer. Lonely Planet notes vendors renting loungers and surfboards on the sand. There is no beach club on the sand itself, and that is a large part of the appeal.

The village behind it has changed fast. Time Out named Pererenan the third coolest neighbourhood in the world in September 2024, and Lonely Planet now describes it as "next in the sights of developers". The beach road is lined with new villas, restaurants and rooftops, but the sand itself is still mostly surfers, stalls and sunset. For where to eat and train on that road, see our Pererenan and Seseh local guide, which we will not repeat here.

Is Pererenan Beach good for surfing?

Yes, if you are already a confident surfer. Pererenan has a right and a left breaking over reef and rock at the rivermouth between Echo Beach and the statue. The right is the main wave: Bali.live describes it running 80 metres or more, with barrels on the take-off on a good day. The left is shorter, steeper and faster, and its inside ends over a shallow shelf that you want to kick out well before.

  • Level: intermediate to advanced. The specialist surf guides we checked all say beginners should not learn here.
  • Tide: mid tide is the sweet spot. Low tide exposes the lava shelf, and high tide makes the wave soft and slow.
  • Swell and wind: south to south-west swell, best from shoulder to just overhead. Mornings are glassy on the east to north-east offshore wind, and the onshore usually arrives by midday.
  • Season: the dry season, roughly April or May to October.
  • Crowd: the take-off zone is small and the lineup is competitive, with regular locals and expats. Respect the order and you will be fine.

Paddle out through the channel just south of the statue rather than over the rocks. Once the swell goes much beyond head high, the bay tends to close out, and Echo Beach or Seseh become the better call.

Lessons and boards. Learn at Batu Bolong, where the surf schools teach on a soft, forgiving wave. Our best surf schools in Canggu guide lists one-to-one lessons from about IDR 400,000 for two hours, and board hire at the Batu Bolong car park stalls from about IDR 50,000 to 100,000 for two hours (prices checked October 2026). If an instructor suggests Pererenan for your first lesson, find another instructor.

Can you swim at Pererenan Beach?

For most people, no. Pererenan is a surf beach with rips, scattered rocks and a shallow reef shelf, and there are no formal lifeguards on this stretch of coast. We say the same about all of Canggu in our best beaches in Canggu guide, and Pererenan is one of the less forgiving ones.

Who Pererenan is not for. If you are travelling with young children who want to play in the waves, or you are a weak swimmer, this is not your beach. Walk the sand, sit in the shallows on a calm day and swim in your villa pool. Bali.live also flags that the water near the rivermouth can carry runoff after heavy rain, so give it a day or two after a downpour, even if you surf.

When and where should you watch the sunset at Pererenan Beach?

Sunset is the reason most people come. Being so close to the equator, Pererenan sees the sun go down between about 6pm and 6:45pm all year: around 6:07pm in May and June, around 6:15pm in late October, and around 6:45pm in January. Arrive 45 minutes early. The light on the wet black sand and the surfers on the right is the show.

On the sand | the stalls by the statue

The simplest option is the best one. Grab a coconut or a beer from one of the stalls near the car park and sit on the sand or a lounger facing the rivermouth. Bring small notes and a light layer, because the wind cools quickly after dark.

Hippie Fish | the sunset table

At Jl. Pantai Pererenan 171, right beside the beach, Hippie Fish serves Mediterranean and grill dishes with a rooftop that looks over the waves. Chope puts mains in the IDR 100,000 to 250,000 range. Book a rooftop table ahead for sunset at weekends.

For a beanbag beach club instead, walk a few minutes east along the sand to Echo Beach, where La Brisa sits right by the sand. For the full sunset circuit, see our best beach clubs in Canggu guide.

How do you get to Pererenan Beach, and what does parking cost?

Follow Jl. Pantai Pererenan to the very end. It is the one road through the village down to the sea, and there is a car park facing the break. There is no entrance fee. Published reports we checked in October 2026 put parking at about IDR 2,000 for a scooter and IDR 5,000 for a car, paid to the attendant. Spaces fill around sunset, so a scooter is easier than a car.

  • From Echo Beach: about 300 metres west along the sand and rocks, or roughly 1 km by road (Lonely Planet)
  • From Batu Bolong: about ten minutes by scooter
  • To Seseh: the next beach up the coast, a short ride, or a long walk along the sand at low tide
  • From the airport: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours by car for the Canggu area, and longer at peak times (see our Bali travel times guide)

How does Pererenan compare with Echo Beach, Batu Bolong and Seseh?

All four sit on the same black sand coastline within a few minutes of each other. The difference is the wave and the crowd.

Batu BolongLearning to surf, cafésBeginner friendlyBusiest, surf schools on the sand
SesehA quiet walk, empty sunsetExperienced (long left far out)Quietest, village feel

Surf levels are typical for dry season conditions. Any of these beaches can be dangerous on a big swell.

When is the best time to visit Pererenan Beach?

For surf, go in the dry season, roughly May to October, early in the morning on a mid tide before the onshore wind arrives. For sunset, any month works, though the wet season from November to March brings more cloud and heavier rain. Our best time to visit Bali guide breaks the year down month by month.

The beach is calmest in the early morning and busiest in the hour before sunset, when the car park fills and the stalls are at their most social. Events can change the mood too: in August 2025 the village hosted a kite competition on the beach as part of the Mereren Fest weekend, according to Now Bali.

Pro tip: Check the tide before you check the forecast. Plan your surf around mid tide, plan your sunset walk around low tide when the sand is widest, and if the two clash, the sunset still wins.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim at Pererenan Beach?

Is Pererenan Beach good for beginner surfers?

No. The main waves at the rivermouth break over shallow reef and rock and the lineup is competitive. Beginners should learn at Batu Bolong, about ten minutes away by scooter, and come to Pererenan to watch. Lessons start from about IDR 400,000 for two hours one-to-one, checked October 2026.

How much is parking at Pererenan Beach?

There is no entrance fee. Published reports we checked in October 2026 put parking at the end of Jl. Pantai Pererenan at about IDR 2,000 for a scooter and IDR 5,000 for a car. Carry small notes, and come by scooter at sunset because the car park fills.

What time is sunset at Pererenan Beach?

Sunset at Pererenan falls between about 6pm and 6:45pm all year. It is earliest in May and June, at around 6:07pm, and latest in January and February, at around 6:45pm. In late October it is around 6:15pm. Arrive 45 minutes early for the golden hour.

How far is Pererenan Beach from Echo Beach and Batu Bolong?

Is Pererenan Beach worth visiting if you do not surf?

Yes, for sunset. Watching good surfers on the rivermouth right as the sky turns orange, a cold coconut from a beach stall and dinner on Jl. Pantai Pererenan afterwards is one of the best evenings in Canggu. Just do not plan a swimming day here.

Long story short

Go to Pererenan Beach for the last hour of light, not for a swim. Park a scooter for about IDR 2,000, buy a coconut, and watch the rivermouth right as the sun drops into the sea. Surf it only if you can handle reef on a mid tide, and learn at Batu Bolong if you cannot. Then walk up Jl. Pantai Pererenan for dinner.
