Almost every beginner in Canggu learns at Batu Bolong or Old Man's, and both are sand, not reef — which is why Canggu is a far more forgiving place to start than Uluwatu. Nyangko and Sea N Surf are the best value at IDR 350,000-400,000 for two hours, both private or two-to-one. The Chillhouse is the only pay-per-lesson school in Canggu publishing ISA-licensed and lifesaver-certified coaches, at IDR 600,000. Nengah is the pick for kids and families and insists on one-to-one under twelve. Sōleïa is the week-long camp option and the best choice for an adult who is genuinely nervous in water. Book the 6am slot. After 10am in peak season the lineup is unmanageable and the wind has turned.

Where beginners actually learn — and the reef myth
Half the guides online call Batu Bolong a reef break. It is functionally sand. There is a rock and reef base underneath and exposed rock at the north end near the temple, but the part you will be surfing is sandbank. Old Man's, 200 metres away, is sand and rock over a deeper reef, which makes its waves smaller and softer still, and it has a proper paddle-out channel where Batu Bolong has none. Those two are where you learn.
The rest of Canggu is not for you yet. Berawa is shifting sandbanks with punchier walls, fine on a small day and not otherwise. Echo Beach's rivermouth breaks over a submerged rock shelf and holds double-overhead, and Pererenan has a shallow rock shelf on the inside. If an instructor suggests Echo or Pererenan for a first lesson, book someone else.
Batu Bolong stops being beginner-friendly at low tide, when it closes out and turns shallow and punchy, and above head-high, when it produces a shore pound that makes getting in and out genuinely dangerous. The sweet spot is waist-to-shoulder on a mid tide pushing in.
Our take, school by school
Nyangko Surf School — the best value
IDR 400,000 one-to-one for two hours, IDR 350,000 each in a pair, five-lesson packs at IDR 1,800,000. Board, rashguard, zinc, water, theory and beach transport included. Instructors are lifesaving certified, and sessions run 6am to 6pm scheduled around tide and swell rather than a fixed timetable. The verdict: the best price-to-substance ratio in Canggu, and one of the few schools that will move you to Berawa when Batu Bolong is unmanageable. They also refuse kids' lessons when the swell is too big, which is exactly the judgement you want. A small operation with a thin independent review trail, so you are going partly on their word. No standalone board rental.
Sea N Surf — the budget private
IDR 400,000 for a two-hour one-to-one, IDR 750,000 for a pair, IDR 1,750,000 for five. Free Canggu pickup, soft-top, lycra, water, zinc and a shower. Beginners, intermediates and kids all pay the same. The verdict: the cheapest genuine one-to-one in Canggu with no catch on lesson length. Two things to weigh — no instructor certification is published anywhere, and their marketing says non-swimming children are not a problem, which is a claim we would want answered face to face before booking a child in. Reviews are strong but the most recent visible one is from 2024.
The Chillhouse / Canggu Surf School — the certified one
IDR 600,000 a session, IDR 1,700,000 for three, IDR 2,700,000 for six, board included. Strictly one coach to two guests, and they rotate across Batu Bolong, Old Man's, Berawa, Echo and Pererenan depending on conditions, putting beginners into sand-bottom, standable water. The verdict: the only pay-per-lesson school here publishing both ISA licensing and lifesaver certification for every coach — worth the fifty per cent premium if you are nervous, or booking for someone who is. The trade-off is that surf sits inside a retreat business rather than being the whole business.
Nengah Private Surf Guiding — best for kids and families
IDR 550,000 one-to-one, IDR 450,000 each in a pair, five-packs at IDR 2,500,000, family rates from IDR 1,350,000 for two adults and a child. Two full hours in the water rather than door-to-door, strictly one-to-one or two-to-one, instructors trained to the ISA curriculum, board and rash vest included. The verdict: the best family option in Canggu, and the one-to-one requirement for under-twelves is a safety policy rather than an upsell. The most expensive of the independents, and the multi-spot upgrade at IDR 700,000 is a big jump you probably do not need for a first lesson.
Surfing With Rocky — the local who has been there twenty years
IDR 400,000 for a single session, IDR 350,000 each in a three-pack, IDR 750,000 for a couple doing two sessions. A former professional lifeguard who has taught this one break for two decades, with a dry-land warm-up and safety briefing before you go near the water. The verdict: the most experienced pair of eyes on this list, and it is one man. No backup if he is sick or booked, no transport, and the session runs about 90 minutes — a quarter shorter than what Nyangko, Sea N Surf or Nengah give you for the same money. Photos on request only, and not clearly priced.
Sōleïa Surf — the camp, and the nervous-beginner pick
Berawa. Week-long all-inclusive from around EUR 399-424: breakfast, roughly six coached sessions, yoga, board rental, beach transport and video analysis, at two to three students per instructor. ISA-certified, and they run the ISA Level 1 instructor course themselves — the clearest institutional credential in Canggu. The verdict: the best option in Canggu for an adult who is not comfortable in water, because they run surf-apnea workshops and customised lessons for exactly that. The catch is that it is package-only with a week minimum, so it is no use to a two-day visitor, and past level two you get guiding rather than coaching.
One naming trap. Sōleïa is the rebrand of Solid Surf House Bali, same Berawa property. Anyone quoting Solid Surf House Canggu prices in 2026 is quoting a brand that no longer trades here.

Anything under IDR 300,000 for a two-hour lesson is a red flag, and anything over IDR 600,000 is boutique or hotel pricing rather than better teaching.
When to go, and when not to
Two right answers. For the most reliable waves, May to July — dry-season swell, consistent offshore mornings. For the smallest, least intimidating waves, December to February, when the wet season delivers the softest surf of the year and thinner crowds, at the cost of wind and rain. The worst months are August and September, and not because of the surf — peak season, biggest swell, and one of the most congested beginner lineups in Southeast Asia. March, April and November give the cleanest mornings with the fewest people.
Pro tip — book the 6am slot, always. From 6 to 8am Batu Bolong is thin, glassy and offshore. By 10am in peak season it is crowded and the wind has turned onshore, and at sunset the beach, the car park and the water are all rammed. The single biggest difference between a good first lesson and a bad one in Canggu is the hour you booked, not the school you booked.
The safety part nobody writes
The number one hazard at Batu Bolong is not the wave. It is being hit by a loose longboard — yours or a stranger's, ditched by another beginner without control of it. That is the real argument for a two-to-one ratio over a five-to-one one, and the real reason the dawn slot is safer as well as nicer.
Two more. There is a rip channel at the south end of Batu Bolong beach that experienced surfers use to paddle out — beginners should stay at the main peak and not drift south, and any competent instructor will position you. And Canggu is not a patrolled swimming beach: unlike Kuta, Legian and Seminyak it has no established Balawista flagged-zone coverage, so assume no lifeguard, and get out early if you can see a storm building. Smaller things: the black sand gets hot enough to burn your feet, and water quality drops sharply after heavy rain.
The Cabo angle
If you own a villa in Canggu, the 6am problem is your problem too. The guests who rebook are the ones who got in the water at dawn, and that only happens if the villa is a short ride from Batu Bolong, has somewhere to rinse and store a board, and has a host who booked the lesson the night before instead of leaving it to the front desk at 9am.
