The short answer

For traditional hatha in an open bamboo shala, go to The Practice on Batu Bolong. For the widest timetable, Samadi in Padang Linjong and Serenity near the beach run classes all day, and Serenity is the place for aerial yoga. In Pererenan, The Path pairs yoga with a sauna and cold plunge, and Canggu Yoga Centre is the hot-yoga option. For yoga with an ocean view, Udara in Seseh. Expect to pay 139k to 170k for a drop-in class, less with a pack.

How to choose a studio in Canggu

Canggu's yoga scene splits roughly by village. Batu Bolong and Padang Linjong have the long-established shalas and the busiest timetables. Pererenan has the newer, more modern studios, including the only verified hot-yoga room and the best yoga-plus-recovery set-up. Seseh is quieter, with sea-view shalas. Pick the studio near where you are staying: the shortcuts between villages are scooter-only, and most studios do not let you in late.

A few studios that still appear in older guides are no longer in Canggu. Desa Seni has moved to the Tabanan highlands, and Radiantly Alive's Canggu studio has closed. Nirvana Life in Berawa runs yoga classes but is a members' gym and recovery club rather than a drop-in studio.

The studios, area by area

The Practice | traditional hatha on Batu Bolong

The Practice is the purist's choice: lineage-based hatha, yin, kirtan and meditation in an open-air bamboo shala on Jl Pantai Batu Bolong. Mornings start with Qi Gong at 8am followed by hatha at 8:30, and there is a capped beginners' class late morning. Drop-in is 170k, a 10-class pass 1.35m. Arrive early: there is strictly no late entry. thepracticebali.com

Samadi Bali | the all-rounder in Padang Linjong

Samadi has one of the fullest timetables in Canggu, from Ashtanga and Mysore (its roots) to vinyasa, yin, kundalini and restorative, plus a weekly sound healing on Fridays and handstand workshops. There is an organic café on site and a Sunday market. Drop-in 155k, 12-class pack 1.45m, with beginner classes midweek. samadibali.com

Serenity | aerial yoga near the beach

Serenity runs around nine classes a day on Jl Nelayan, close to Batu Bolong beach: vinyasa, hatha, yin, kundalini, prenatal and, most famously, aerial yoga. Aerial spots are very limited online, so book early. The property is alcohol- and smoke-free with a vegan café. Drop-in is around 139k. serenitybali.com

The Path Yoga Center | yoga plus sauna and cold plunge in Pererenan

The Path calls itself "not a traditional yoga studio", and it is the one to pick if you want to recover as well as stretch. Classes run 6am to 9pm in an air-conditioned room (vinyasa, power, yin, breathwork, sound healing), and there is a sauna, hot plunge and cold plunge on site. Drop-in around 165k, 10 classes 1.35m, monthly unlimited 2.2m. On Jl Munduk Tengah. thepathyogacenter.com

Canggu Yoga Centre | hot yoga in Pererenan

The only verified hot-yoga studio in Canggu, on Jl Dalem Penataran in Pererenan, running Bikram-style hot yoga on weekday mornings, power vinyasa and "Inferno" hot Pilates. Drop-in around 165k. Hot yoga in Bali's climate is intense, so it suits people who already practise.

Chandra Yoga | rice-field shala in Pererenan

A calm, alignment-based studio overlooking rice fields with a small waterfall, off Jl Pantai Pererenan. Hatha, flow, gentle morning yin and power classes for all levels, booked mainly through ClassPass.

Udara Bali | aerial yoga above the ocean in Seseh

Udara is the view pick: four shalas, three of them looking over the sea in Seseh, with aerial, hatha, vinyasa, yin, water yoga and sound healing. Drop-in 170k (200k for Yin and Sound), 10 classes 1.475m. Entry closes 15 minutes after the start. udara-bali.com

Pranava Yoga | value Ashtanga in Berawa

The best-value drop-in we found, at 110k, inside Matra Bali on Jl Pantai Berawa. Ashtanga vinyasa, power, hatha and anti-gravity (hammock) classes for all levels. matrabali.com

Joga Yoga | community studio on Batu Bolong

A friendly community studio known for its teacher trainings, with vinyasa, strength-based and restorative classes. Drop-in around 140k. jogayogatraining.com

ADDA Yoga | rooftop yin and sound

A rooftop studio on Jl Kayu Manis (at AWAN co-working) with restorative yin, hatha, power vinyasa and a weekly sound healing. Book through ClassPass.
