Ten years ago a Bali villa sold on its pool and its view. In 2026 it sells on those plus one thing nobody photographs: the internet works, and the power stays on. Half our guests are working remotely for at least part of their stay, and nothing turns a five-star review into a three-star one faster than a dropped video call or a blackout that kills the aircon at 2am. Here is what a reliable setup actually costs, and how we build it across the villas we manage.

Budget roughly IDR 350,000-500,000 a month for fibre internet, add Starlink at IDR 750,000 a month plus about IDR 5.4M of hardware if your area's fibre is weak or you want a failover, and IDR 2M-20M one-off for power backup depending on whether you protect just the essentials or the whole villa. Why internet and power are now make-or-break
Guests filter and review on connectivity. A remote worker who can't take a call will leave a review that costs you far more than the setup would have. And Bali's grid, especially on the Bukit and in newer developments, still browns out and cuts more than people expect. The villas that hold a 91% occupancy and a 4.85 rating are the ones where none of this is ever the guest's problem.
Step 1: Fibre first
Where it's available, wired fibre is still your best value and lowest latency. In the villa market the two names you'll hear are Global Extreme and MTM. Global Extreme was historically the most reliable provider in Bali — though its customer service has slipped noticeably over the last few years, most likely because it hasn't kept pace with how fast villas have gone up. When a tree comes down and snaps a cable, you can be days without wifi. It's still the one we'd choose over MTM, which tells you plenty. Expect IDR 350,000-500,000 a month for a home plan, with installation often free on a contract. The catch: coverage is patchy on parts of the Bukit and in Nyang Nyang, Ungasan and newer estates, where the line may not reach or speeds disappoint.
Step 2: Starlink where fibre is weak - or as failover
This is where the quieter corners of the Bukit change the maths. Starlink Indonesia in 2026 runs about IDR 750,000 a month for the 100 Mbps residential plan (IDR 900,000 for 200 Mbps), on top of a roughly IDR 5.4M one-off for the hardware. For a villa where fibre is slow or absent, Starlink is often the difference between a workable listing and a stream of connectivity complaints. Even where fibre is good, we increasingly run Starlink as a second line so a provider outage never reaches the guest.
With Starlink you're really paying for one thing: reliability. And in a digital-nomad hub like Bali, "the wifi always works" is a genuine differentiator — it's exactly the kind of detail remote workers filter for and call out in reviews.
Making two connections seamless
The trick is a dual-WAN router (IDR 1.5M-4M) that holds both fibre and Starlink and fails over automatically in seconds. The guest never notices the switch. Pair it with a proper mesh Wi-Fi system (IDR 2M-6M) so coverage is strong from the bedroom to the pool deck - one router behind a concrete wall is the most common reason a "fast" villa still gets "bad wifi" reviews.
Step 3: Power backup
Bali's outages are usually short but frequent, and a villa that goes dark - no gate, no pump, no aircon, no router - is a guest-experience failure even at 20 minutes. Three tiers:

For most premium one-to-three-bedroom villas, an inverter-and-battery setup that keeps internet, lights and fans running - plus a UPS so the Wi-Fi never even blinks - is the sweet spot. Larger staffed estates justify a full automatic generator.
What we run across the portfolio
Our default on a premium villa is fibre as the primary line, Starlink as automatic failover, a dual-WAN router, mesh Wi-Fi covering every space a guest sits, a UPS so the internet and gate never drop, and battery or generator backup sized to the property. It isn't the cheapest option - it's the one that keeps connectivity and power off the review page entirely. It also protects the things guests don't see: security systems, smart locks and CCTV that all fail without power. What it means for your numbers
All in, a robust setup is a four-figure USD one-off plus around IDR 1M-1.5M a month in connectivity - trivial against a single bad review's impact on a premium nightly rate. Treat it the way you'd treat the pool: infrastructure that has to work, not an amenity you bolt on. It belongs in the same bucket as the rest of what a Bali villa rental should include, and it's exactly the kind of detail absentee owners can't afford to leave to chance.
